Names for inactive characters are rarely to almost never purged and on any decently active server most players just resort to a random string of letters these days. It would be nice if blizzard would either be more regular about purging names or update the whole system and let us give our characters a last name as well like a lot of eastern mmos do to solve this problem, or alternatively just have some sort of tag system on the back end as they already do with our battle IDs but for names. I really donāt care if thereās 10 people with the same name running around but I do care that Iām locked out of naming my character anything but names like asdasgsdgwe on active servers.
People have been asking for this for almost as long as WOW has existed. It would be a nice quality of life thing but I am not hopeful on the change.
However, I did get to make an Earthen character named Bƶb after watching āBeetlejuice Beetlejuiceā the other night.
And itās gotten worse as WoW has existed, weāre 20 years in good luck finding any sort of decent name.
A last name or title slot at the front or back would be amazing, calling dibs on the Hunter. Give everyone one free name change to go with it.
Real talk, I actually think they should ask players to choose a singular Player name (once you buy the game, free accounts just get a temp name in the meantime). Your Player name would need to be completely distinct and is shared across all servers (and possibly regions). Effectively the same thing as your Battletag, just preserving the latter for privacy reasons. Your Player name would be entirely public.
Your Character name would instead be for roleplaying purposes only. NPCās would reference your Characterās name, but character names could be used by multiple people, even on a server.
When running around the world, by default you would only see other playersā Player names, however, you could toggle to see their Character names (or both) if you want to enjoy the roleplaying aspect.
I feel like that would open up a ton of new name options, and while there would still be some minor competition of names, I think it would be reassuring to know that once you land on a Player name, then that is your unique name.
Again, just make sure that free accounts are given temporary Player names (that presumably have numbers on the end) just to prevent free accounts from squatting on names.
Would love to see the character string longer, for sure.
i am swarf
Giving us last names would solve pretty much everything.
Though I do feel like it would also come with 6 months of things not working properly and extended maintenance as a trade-off.
We need about 8 more characters or soā¦and a space or underscore or something
Itāll start losing our names entirely for weeks on end till they get the bugs fixed. lol
Be a free for all for names in the meantime lol
Add a space option, expand character count, and make this thing usableā> ā
My name means āTangerine Windā - Just gotta get oddly creative and scrap together other languages.
Most of my toon names are based on words scrapped together in varied languages.
Related: I do agree that naming needs a makeover.
I can relate.
Need to add a space so we have last names. Donāt even need a new name box, just allow us to add a space.
Yeah even just letting us use space as a character would work and wouldnāt require them to force any current characters to change, or if they do add a second box they could make it optional. Thereās some many ways they could fix this and basically any of them would be better than what we have now.
The restrictions of 12 letters and no SPACE or apostrophe ruin so many names.
Baldurās Gate 1 let you use 18 letters including SPACE and apostrophe and that came came out in 1998.
Warband names. Same concept as the legacy names in SWOTOR.
The best way to fix this is to allow surnames.
Last names, hyphens and apostrophes please and thank you.
and this.
I just cheat and use Ć
Although it really messes with the character lookup function on websites or did
Iād like an apostrophe
