Yay so they finally added the built in map pins this expansion or was it at the end of the last one…
No external sources use it.
Why? Because the damn chat command for a pin is a lengthy script. While add-ons are simple as /way x,-y

Open up map, ctrl click map where you want to go. Go there. Ctrl click pin to get rid of it.
It was meant to pin a location on your map, from your map. As is usual, if we want to do anything other than the basics, we have to use an addon.
I think it was here for a while, I remember using it in Zenith Mortis
Aka, the current implementation is useless unless someone else links you a pin, or you already know the place you want to go to.
Meanwhile over at wowhead /way is spammed everywhere…
Well yeah. Because they’re using Tom Tom. Like I said, we always have to use addons because Blizz half bakes this stuff.
Is a bit confused. The map pin was meant to be used ingame so that you could mark something for yourself that you wanted to get to, or mark it to let people know that “X thing is here at this spot”. It’s meant to be a temporary aid to location, and it is temporary because the next time you want to pin something, the earlier one disappears.
The locations of permanent items is completely different and makes use of map location numbers; in my case I use Titan Panel, an add on I’ve used since I first started playing and which provides locations for me separately from map pins. So I can a map pin as a temporary marker and use my Titan Panel for permanent locating.
I’m possibly missing something but I just don’t get the issue here. If you are suggesting Blizzard add such a feature themselves well, there are lots of add on features they could potentially add themselves. I think personally there are better uses for their development time.
For what it’s worth, it was the Shadowlands prepatch.
Still missing the issue.
Yes, temporary map pins do one thing. Resources provide locations of permanent spots via a location using numbers. Apples. Oranges.
Literally nowhere is there a discussion about temporary or permanent.
The issue is that you go to Wowhead and there’s /way x,y for coordinates for somewhere. That only works with Tom Tom. Which means if you want to pin that location without an addon, you have to figure out the coordinates on your map and then pin it yourself, instead of using a simple command in chat to pin it for you.
Map pins in game require you to search the map to pin it. Map pins from addons are just a simple command line.
For like quite a lot of the things in this game you have to look up external resources. And those resources tends to use tom-toms /way command to give you the location.
Like the current Trail of Style/tenders event which has 12 npc’s scattered across the dragon isles.
I’ve only ever used the Map Pins to announce stuff in General chat for other people via a macro. For myself, I just use Handy Notes and associated plugins.
Know what? I agree. Blizzard had no reason to make so lengthy as it is and not make it how it was with /way x, y. It just sounds like bad code optimization on their part.
I have no doubt that tom-tom is also a lengthy script… Behind the scenes.
But yeah, the front-end should have had a simple chat command.
I have hardly ever used that add on. As I said, I use Titan Panel because of its various features (like tracking currencies, etc) but it also has a location feature which I use every day. It is extremely simple to understand. I accept that there are probably add ons that do things for you - people love simplifying the game - but I’ve never bothered to search for those.
From what I remember of Tom Tom, you still need to input coordinates for the add on to function, yes? Again, I’m not familiar with it so I don’t know for sure how that part works. Anyway, it’s not a huge issue for me so I guess I will just continue playing the way I do now.
The chat command is /way x,y and that’s how people find things in game.
The pin function baseline in the game doesn’t allow for a simple command. Thus, the OP’s issue.
