The Building of Cities

It would be nice to be able to establish a foothold on a certain piece of land in the game, then invest in the building of a city, complete with a bank, AH, vendors, trainers, flight path, quest givers, etc.

Example: In the contested zone of Ungoro Crater, someone from the Horde decides they want to establish an outpost as a start of building a city. They get a charter from Orgrimmar, which costs 100,000 gold. You find your spot then plant your flag. You give the outpost a name, and an NPC vendor is placed.

Little by little, you and other players may invest into building up the city. Let’s say 10 million gold for a bank, 5 million for an auction house, 1 million for a flight path. You can place a 10% donation from your loot to go towards this effort. Hey, NPCs need relocation expenses, material to build, housing for their families, etc. You can place a keep, modeled after one of many keeps in the game. They are all cookie cutter anyway.

During the building of this city, there are events, like invasions from Alliance or from other affected entities who don’t want to yield a strategic advantage to the Horde. Maybe Onyxia decides that the Horde already have a large enough presence and wants to burn the city down alongside 500 whelps.

Damage caused by these incursions cost money to repair, obviously.

Once the outpost is a full-fledged city, it’s set. It cannot be torn down or burned to the ground… but it could be occupied by an opposing force if not properly defended.

This would be per-realm.

I think this would be a pretty amazing addition to the game.

I cant see this starting a fight in game over where your server should set up this city.

Sounds an awful lot like garrisons with an additional dependence on the rest of the realm, which may or may not already be dead. Some realms have such a low pop, they’d probably never achieve half the stuff you suggest.

Think of it like making a guild. Anybody could purchase a charter for 100,000 gold and place an outpost. How far the building gets depends on how many invest in that outpost, and how many decide to defend it when it is attacked. Not all will survive.

Alternative suggestion.

Just wait for 8.3 and the rise of Vulpera tent cities which will soon litter the landscape like slum shanties.

The world would be one gigantic city in a year.

I remember filling my bags with tents in WoD and going to someones garrison and turning it in to a shanty town…

Suffice to say i support this ideal.

Watch for some inexplicable reason the city ends up in Desolace or Vashj’ir and no one can change it.

Or give it specifically to guilds to fiddle with and not have players “participate” in your city. I mean…why would I contribute anything at all to a city that probably would have no benefit to me, just an additional non noteworthy city that isn’t Org/SW, and kind of a waste of resources that I can invest in other things more important. An idea but it would be better to let it be a Guild thing rather than the whole server.

Doubt others will be able to see them… despite how cool that could be.

Pretty much guild garrisons is what you are thinking.

But now you could add a PvP/GvG element to the game. It could be interesting.

I don’t know how many have played Everquest II but all I want is an instanced housing system like that. An optional guild hall system would be neat as well because like Anduin said we need time to rebuild. As for how we gain items, a new proffesion (or two) could allow us to create some items and for others potential drops from bosses and world quests/PvP.

edit: God I HATE this “trust” system, can’t include links can’t include images unless you freaking live on the forums.

The only real problem with allowing player build settlements is I’d rather not see Ultima Online brought here. Lord of the Rings had a neat system so I guess if there were areas we could build up that would be cool. Who knows maybe even have dailies/weeklies to defend the area against invasions.

Sounds like garrisons with buildings and invasions

Yeah you can’t just have a outpost/city anywhere.

And i’m not donating any gold to such an endeavor.

I played EQ2…the only thing I want from that game is the dungeon maker.

That would be your right, as donating to it would be optional. If you ever did shop there, you would probably pay higher prices…and maybe some quests would not be open to you.
