The Box of Many Things... except Alt Friendliness

Simple Post really.

The Box of Many Things was a rather heated subject of 9.1. Some people liked it cause it added new stuff to Torghast, some people hated it because it felt like you just took things away from Torghast just to add them back behind a gate.

Despite this, I think most people are at like a neutral thought on it, except in one area - Catch Up and Alts.

Despite being an entire patch later, there’s no sort of catch-up mechanism added for the Box for people returning now, as well as no remote sort of help for people who have already completed the box on one toon.

I have reached the point I despise Torghast entirely because my alts don’t have the box completed. Heck, Maizou doesn’t even have it completed because of how bad the Hunter powers were prior to 9.2, I ended up doing the box on my Warlock. Even with the box powers? I don’t particularly like Torghast, but it becomes manageable to get through.

That said, I’m still forced to do Torghast on my Paladin for god knows how long because she needs 13,000 Soul Ash to re-craft legendaries, as I opted for the Kyrian Legendaries on her, so she needs the non-covenant legendaries now for next week.

The lack of box powers is very evident. Even moreso that the other people farming Ash also have not unlocked the box, because they too are on alts, or trying to catch up.

Can we please get some improvements for the box? Make it account-wide, have a catchup mechanic like Artifact/Azerite Knowledge, etc. Just, something. Anything really.

Heck, is anyone hurt from just outright unlocking the box for everyone now? The new Torghast content, the Jailer’s Gauntlet, isn’t affected by the Box, and I’d wager 99% of those trying Flawless 16s already have the box unlocked fully.

I think the box should have been account wide to begin with, I love the type of progression system it wants to be, but it has had the unfortunate effect that all the layers past layer 8 have been designed with you having the box unlocked in mind, which makes it very inaccessible to new players.

I’ve been rewriting the draft of my Torghast thread a billion times already, as I have a lot to say about it and I’ll probably reiterate a bit more there (when I’m happy with it), but I think the box is a great idea executed poorly. Tower knowledge should have been earned through progressing through Torghast, and they should be an additive bonus to running Torghast and not a requirement for clearing it. Some of the bonuses are also kind of lackluster and not very interactive, so it feels more like a checklist of boxes (pun intended) that you need to tick instead of an actual path of progression that makes you stronger.

The other big problem of Torghast is that the real way you actually get stronger and better at it is by… not playing it and doing other content, but that’s a topic for another day.

Completely agree with this. I want to do Torghast on alts (especially as I can’t seem to progress further on my main), but the fact I have to research the entirety of the Box of Many Things from the start has kept me from doing so. If making it account-wide really isn’t something that’s possible, if you just have to completely research it one on character to be able to send/buy Tower Knowledge to/for alts (e.g. for anima to send via mail to alts), that’d be an improvement.

Or, as OP mentioned, just unlock it for everyone at this point.

Exactly. And still award Tower Knowledge (like you get at cap anyway), and have THAT be the basis for the “Complete the Box” achievement, turn it into something that tracks how much Tower Knowledge you’ve obtained. And once you get as much that would cap it before they unlocked it, voila, achievement.
