The Archivist Codex: Books of Binding

https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/The_Archivists%27_Codex_(item)

The Books of Binding are the most interesting considering they are pretty much the Red and Blue Books of Myst.

Logistically that would normally suggest that the Mad Witch is the Sirus of Archivist Roh-Senara’s apprentices but…

The Books of Binding entries have Archivist Roh-Suir claim his mentor Archivist Roh-Senara told him not to touch the last page of the books yet in https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Book_of_Binding:_The_Mad_Witch it’s made clear he was not aware of the Books having all their pages removed by a fellow scholar and discovering this makes him unwilling to complete the books…

Almost as if the Books did not have prisoners until after they were lost… Roh-Suir did say that fellow Scholars were studying the Books but why would the Books have all their pages torn out if the Scholars accidentally got stuck in them while studying them?

Naturally they had all the pages to their prisons ripped out because they burned all the Portal Books in Roh-Senara’s Library!

Furthermore the fact that there are clearly prisoners shrieking out to him from the Books makes Roh-Suir more unwilling to complete them despite apparently having an interest in completing them before(something we know Yeesha never had).

The implications seem to suggest that he may infact be the Sirus of this story… Roh-Suir… Sirus… the resemblance between the names’ pronunciation is scary…

In the Myst Franchise it is noted that Sirus intended to use Achenar to test the Memory Chamber they created yet Achenar went and ran. Yeesha was not born yet so obviously she could not be used in the first test… In WoW it could easily be different…

If the Mad Witch is infact the Yeesha of the story then she was used by Roh-Suir to test the Books first then the Achenar of WoW used the other more interesting book to his mind getting both trapped.

Archivist Roh-Senara naturally would be absent at the time due to Roh-Suir secretly burning the library of portal books forcing her(upon finding her library burned mysteriously) to take the other books to places of protection and upon returning discover that two of her apprentices used the Trap Books(with evidence being that they now have the last pages in them) proving they were responsible for the burning.

Archivist Roh-Senara would of course take the Books to the caves and tear out all the pages to keep them from escaping. Little would she realize that Roh-Suir planned everything!

Roh-Suir sought forbidden knowledge and found it at the cost of his rivals… and became the new Archivist…all because he and WoW’s version of Achenar and Yeesha were apprentices not descendants of the Atrus of the story.

It seems like Blizzards attempt to recreate esoteric lore and “Hidden Mysteries” to me. Not sure if they are going to be successful with it, so far it has just caused more confusion than cool lore.

I want them to have this kind of depth though.

I think it’s just a reference to “magical being trapped in book” trope.

Like the 90’s movie The Pagemaster, or that original Teen Titans TV show episode where a book is possessed by a demon and Raven is tricked into releasing it:

Or like the same motif in the various Lovecraft mythology about beings or people trapped in books.

Although my first thought with the Crimson book was “Le Dragon Rouge” aka Grand Grimoire, a demon-summoning book. Second thought was the occult publisher Scarlet Impress, specifically the grimoire “The Red Goddess”. But I have an occult background so :stuck_out_tongue:

Book of Binding: The Tormented Sorceror

<When you first found this book, the muffled voice within was relatively calm. Now that it has been reassembled, save for a single page, the voice is yelling at you.

The tome rustles with every word.>

Are you here to release me? You must!

Recover just one additional azure page…

Remember, do not touch the crimson pages. Do not open the other book. She seeks to persuade you with her lies! You have been warned!

Book of Binding: The Mad Witch
<The ancient tome has been painstakingly restored and reassembled, save for a single missing page. Upon opening the book, a voice that was once calm and measured shrieks at you in rage.>

Did you not understand my directions? Where is the final crimson page?!

You must release me from this prison!

And heed my warning… whatever you do, no matter what he tells you, do not touch the azure pages! Do not set him free! He speaks nothing but lies!

Both book prisoners tell us to not touch the pages of the Rival’s color!

Myst is the only work in Media which has the Book Prisoners trapped in Red and Blue Books with Red and Blue Pages with each prisoner telling you to not touch the pages of the rival prisoner’s book!

Look for the verdant page. Got it.

Don’t you mean the White Page?..

The Page torn out was to Atrus’s Myst Book not his Green D’ni Book.

The closest thing to a D’ni Book is the Portal to Oribos and that thankfully is having people walk in and out on a regular basis due to the Waystone we opened so any Portal Book to Korthia is unnecessary despite having a single Page ripped out!

Of course since the Atrus who kept the final Pages for the Red and Blue Books is the Attendant who died giving the current Archivist his position we can say if there was any scheme to trap her on Oribos, Azeroth or Earth it failed.
