If we compare the current cast of characters between the Alliance and the Horde we see a massive disparity in power. Jaina herself solos the entire Horde counter attack and leaves the raid because she got bored and felt bad for how pathetic the Horde is. Tyrande and Malfurion man handle the Horde in Kalimdor, reversing all the gains they made in the War of Thorns. Alleria and the Velfs basically prove all the Belfs wrong by showing how overpowered and non-consequential mastering the Void is.
The Horde’s only characters that can hope to match up to them are Thrall and maybe Sylvanas. However, Thrall is doing a Cata Rexxar in which he’s absent from the story entirely. Sylvanas isn’t even up to par with the mentioned above. The most we’ve seen from her is the mass raise dead spell and her ability to run away. We just have to wait and see how much power she gets from the Old Gods.
But Kast, doesn’t the Horde have powerful warriors like Saurfang and Baine? Surely they’re stronger than Turalyon and Genn. I’m glad you asked that Jimmy. Magic makes warriors obsolete. Gul’dan perma rooted Grom in WoD. Malfurion pimp slaps Saurfang without even trying. In a world where magic is an auto win warriors don’t really mean much. I actually feared for Baine’s life because I knew there was nothing he could do against Jaina.
What about the average Horde grunt, aren’t they more powerful than the average Alliance footman? Wrong again. Game play has consistently shown it is the opposite. The Alliance remarks on the Horde attacks in Kul’tiras shows that the Horde historically relied in their superior numbers to win in battles. Even Chronicles constantly reinforces that the Horde always outnumbered the Alliance 3 to 1 at least. It gets even worse when Blizzard stated that the Nelves held off the Horde for years while outnumbered 8 to 1.
The Zandalari were supposed to make the power gap a little more balanced, but questing in that zone made me realize the Zandalari don’t even control their entire island. Talanji, while more powerful than most priest, can’t hold a candle to Jaina even when backed up by the Horde NPC, Nathan, Lasan, Rokhan, Thalyssra, and Zul.
Why is this important? It’s because it turns the Alliance and Horde struggle into a superficial war in which the Alliance only humors the Horde’s attempt at fighting. Why am I supposed to take the Horde seriously when they don’t have answers to the Alliance characters? Sure, the Horde may level a couple of towns, but the Alliance is populated with dozens of them. I count only one major settlement in Zandalar while Kul’tiras has more than a handful in each of its three zones.
Remember what happened last time WoW forgot about the rule of “Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards?” We got Varian taking down a fel reaver in one blow, in an epic scene of self-sacrifice resulting in his death. Can’t have Hordies doing cool things like that now can we?
Hmm, I have to say you do make an extremely worrisome point. Lately if feels that way… The only powerful enough or equal to Jaina are the ones you mention but also the new Talanji and probalbly IF he was still alive Kael’Thas (though I think he be far more powerful if he would have live, as the story portrait him as a prodigy in Dalaran…when Jeina was still finishing her studies, I think…can’t remember)
We are LITERALLY almost out of Warchief to kill… I don’t know if this is bad writing or how it works on MMO…
I wonder who will the writers Kill next on their Warchief list… oh who oh who could it be…?
Anyway you do have a point, at the stage of things lorewise the Horde is at its weakest and is basically losing… I really don’t know and is even scary to speculate what “Blizz Team” is going to do next to my Horde…
After Sylvanas who is going to be next to die? lol
Sylvanas is our only heavy hitter. I’d be happy with that, if I thought we’d get to keep her. We won’t though. All hail the Baine friggin’ Bloodhoof, the Warchief Blizzard demands we be happy with.
You sure we did the same quest? I remember Malfurion dabbing on Sylvanas the entire time.
I think the only time the Horde got a cinematic like that was in WC3.
I dunno, but I like where Talanji is going. Me thinks her choice between Sylvanas and Bwonsamdi is really interesting, and is better thought out than Baine or Saurfang’s.
I feel like people put too much stock into “RAW MAGICAL POWER” and tend to forget the power of physical strength. The ability to shoot massive chromatic laserbeams out of your eyes doesn’t make you any less vulnerable to someone with super strength hurling an axe at your back.
This isn’t DBZ. Characters that are just “really good at fighting” can and should be able to stand up to characters who are supposedly powerhouses. Stop trying to group characters into clean little power rankings and start looking at how well certain characters would be able to adapt to the combat situations they’re faced with. This isn’t a linear power progression.
While I don’t necessarily agree with the specifics, I certainly agree with the overall premise. But I question if there is enough time to make it matter given the faction conflict is supposed to be resolved by the end of this expansion.
This is one reason why I agree with Sylvanas. I put myself in her heels for a second:
Sylvanas: “Everyone around me is utterly useless and stupid. Lorthemar, Liadrin, Baine, Rokhan, and Saurfang are all chumps in this war of Demigods. Thrall is on a mental health vacay. And I have to deal with Malfurion, Tyrande, Jaina, Anduin, Alleria, and the rest. And all I have is an army of disaffected chumps mixed with loyal pantywaste that can’t hold a candle to the Alliance.”
“Burn it. Kill them all. Find Old God powers. Something. Make yourselves useful, Horde.”
Omg, your right my fav faction has been the underdog all along… Our only heavy heater is Sylvanas… Why, WHY did you have to take away Kael and turn him into a mana addict Blizz…why…I be even happy if you are a Darkfallen if only you be here to melt that ice princes of Jeina of her Proudmore ego sigh…
Right now I love ANYONE from the Horde to put some respect on her constant display of how powerful she is… She wasent even tired after fighting a raid of Horde Azerite powered heroes… lol
Its gotten to a point of the Horde not even getting screen time… I hate to say it but it really sucks to be Horde right now in story.
You may be right about Talanji… Ill keep a close eye on her as more story is brought out of into the light…
Oh this again. Let me sum up 100 posts between us and just say: “wa.”
Destroying an enemy in war is justified to me. Any nation that harbors would be assassins of the Warchief gets no pity from me when Sylvanas burns them.
