Okay, so I overreacted.

I don’t enjoy the new “optimal” raid build for Elemental on wowhead.

Since I don’t do mythic+ (yet) or serious raiding/PvP, I don’t really need to be too concerned about maximum damage. So, I just made my own solo/outdoor/simple build and I’m having A LOT more fun again.

I’m not 100% happy with it yet, but I’m enjoying it more than the Icefury build that wowhead recommends.

The lava burst/surge build going all the way down the right side of the tree is super fun to play, but the damage isn’t as good as the lightning build. I completely agree with you though, the less optimal builds are much more fun than the min-maxing current lightning ice fury focused build.

On ST dummies, the difference betwen lightning and fire build has been around 1.5k dps for me. Like 14k (fire) dps vs 15.5k dps (lightning)

Lvb could use a 5-10% base damage buff to bring it up a little, but the way the talents interact with eachother maybe it needs more than that.

Haven’t tested AOE much but it seems the difference is massively in favor of lightning.

Im sure a certain discord group will put their collective power together and squash any chance of a “lightning build” from even being viable as they have the last 2 xpacs.

I don’t care what the build ends up as, but use all 4 elements.

I don’t play shaman to spam LB ,and frost shock. Buff meatball and get this ridiculous triple-buff managing nightmare out of here. If I wanted to play a busy spec, id play Enhance.

Sure Icefury is “okay”. It always has been moderately fun, as a filler. But why are fire spells like meatball doing zero dmg so I can juggle 3 buffs with Lb and frS.

This is honestly a tremendous step backwards. Its offensive.

Man… like clockwork every classes forums is having thier new patch meltdown “we SUCK, WE’RE USELESS BLAH BLAH BLAH” … Meanwhile ive seen shamans excelling just fine in game.

I don’t know about top of every meter, but Enhance certainly feels really good right now. I can agree Enhance so far has hut the mark.

Elemental is another story entirely. It doesn’t feel good for your AoE spender to be weaker. It doesn’t feel good for Lava Burst to now be almost a detriment. It doesn’t feel good for the the current top build to have so many buffs and debuffs that you have to squeeze your damage in small 4 second windows.

Most of us don’t care about Prepatch numbers, we care how it feels to play the specs and Ele certainly feels bad, at least for me.

My beloved spec really does feel like a redditor with a vasectomy now. Just completely inept and neutered. Disjointed and clunky at best.

There are a number of issues with the “lightning build(s)” that just aren’t working… and I don’t yet see how another 10 levels of talent points will even fix it at this point…

  • Unrelenting Calamity must be an out of season April fools joke. It’s basically just a stepping stone to get to real talents and is irrelevant.
  • Lightning Rod should not have a duration but either persist on the target until a new target is acquired or have the duration greatly increased.
  • Electrified Shocks should instead provide a significantly larger bonus damage debuff but for just the next lightning bolt or chain lightning, allowing a smoother “weaving” rotation with Icefury.
  • The optimal DPS “window” of Electrified Shocks and Lightning Rod is just microscopic, especially when paired with Elemental Blast. The bonus damage still isnt good enough to skip abilities like Lava Burst, or Elemental Blast during the window.
  • It seems like Earthquake damage was reduced to compensate for Echoes of Great Sundering now being a talent but even with the bonus damage it is still extremely weak, regardless of if a miracle occurs and the tank stands still.
  • For some reason Earthquake fails to appear on certain ground textures. Not sure if this is intended or a visual bug.
  • I’m going to assume that Elemental Equilibrium talent is set to only 8% (vs 15% from the legendary) as a precaution… it’s not like elemental is blowing any other DPS spec out of the water that this bonus needs to be so low for such a short duration.

There is probably much more I can add as I’m going to try out the fire spec as well, but for now this is not looking good. I really do miss the lava burst, Master of Elements weaving build. It was consistent and felt good to play.

The meta builds are rarely fun. I’ll go down the right hand side and have fun. Most players aren’t pushing mythic prog so it’s not even needed.
