Tell me why Client-Side updated models are a bad thing

If I could use the new character/npc models on my own client, would that be a bad thing for you/the playerbase at large? How would it impact your play at all?

lets imagine it’s a switch in settings, defaulted off.

They’re not. I’m all for #nochange and stand by it, but even I’m surprised they didn’t include an option for client-side models.

Not that I’d use them… but I know a lot of players do.

Because the armor you equip to that updated model won’t look properly.

Then you’ll complain some more, and demand every piece is redone.

Because all the alliances races become disgusting hideous beasts and I don’t want people to see my character as that.

What? Where did you read this?

why? I fail to understand the need for this.

but if they allowed any kind of client side models… it would open a doorway for cheats.

We had an option to use old or new models during WoD(may have been before, I can’t remember)

At some point they completely disabled using old models, which is something I’m still upset over. I hate the new animations, and prefer the classic look. It’s no longer possible in retail.

I’ve been curious about the reasoning people have for this as well. I get not liking the new models, but never understood why some people don’t want other people to have the ability to see the new models on their screen. Seems rather selfish to me, but I’ve never seen anyone give a reason for it beyond “#nochanges.”

When we were able to toggle between the two options, there were a lot of complaints from people who take the “role-playing game” aspect of this game more seriously than the rest of us that they’d lost the ability to be in control of how their character was presented to the rest of the world by someone just flipping a toggle and making their character look different than they wanted it to. In all honesty, I think that’s a perfectly reasonable complaint in a RPG.

OP is saying client side only option though, so the only one who would see it is the person using it.

by that, the people that wanted players to see them as the older model had that option taken from them. instead of having the choice, they’re now forced to use the updated models.

Maybe I’m misinterpreting what client-side means here, but that sounds like the situation I’m describing. Does this mean that only that user’s character will appear using the new models while everyone else remains however they want to appear?

Yes. You would see his character as the old model, but OP would see his character as the new.

So you’d have a mish-mash of new and old models out in the same world?

Exactly, it would only appear to the person who changes it. In world, to you, it will still look like the classic models.

No. The toggle makes every character use the new model on OP’s end. You don’t see it, only he does. We had this toggle in game years ago, but Blizzard removed it. Now we’re all forced to use the updated models.

Changing how you see your enemies models on your personal pc might give an advantage in detecting gear levels and spells.

This is untrue, its actually the other way around. Thats the reason they got rid of the toggle in the game itself. The old models are backwards compatible with the new ones. Its the new models animations and items that dont look right on the OLD models.

I wouldn’t think so, the gear all looks the same and the animations would all be similar. Things would just be higher res and have a higher poly count. And the animations would just look smoother, but only on the client side not server side.

Some of the texture distortion on armor was actually fixed on the new models. Here’s a comparison of the Belt of Might:

Here’s my Warrior on BfA with the rank 10 PvP set, it looks pretty good to me:
