Technical Issues

I don’t know how else to put it… wow keeps breaking.
Multiple crashes, freezes, and moments where the game vanishes and then reloads everything piece by piece. I tried everything, nothing helped, I thought maybe addons might be the issue, but when I looked at the numbers in game nothing seemed wrong. I also didn’t want to test turning them all off because I was busy raiding.
I updated all my drivers, even the really obscure ones, made sure everything is running smoothly, did a ram check, nothing.
Well, I finally got around to testing with no addons and… it’s the same.
(This next step seems incredibly obvious, but I just didn’t think of it.)
I then opened up task manager to see wow using ALMOST TEN GIGABYTES OF RAM.
Ran a scan and repair, no issues found, wow still breaks. I have 32gb of ram. I was using 70-90% of my ram. (I do use chrome. I’d love to move away but it’s just too convenient and I haven’t liked anything else I’ve tried. I am looking for alternatives.) Theoretically that shouldn’t be an issue, but it’s the only thing that stands out. I don’t know what else could be causing these issues. Even without Chrome, wow is using over 7gb of ram at a time.
Does anyone know what to do? I want to play, but I’m tired of freezing, especially in raid.
Thanks.

its possible that maybe your ram isnt dumping properly. does it do it with other games? if not, then you may need to reinstall wow.

also, it could be windows not dumping its page files. what you want to do is go to system resources in task manager and then see if there is any hang ups. if you notice hang ups, it means that the system isnt dumping properly for some reason.

You might want to try the tech support forum. Way more knowledgeable people over their, and this thread will probably just be buried in gd.

I opened up another game I play, Monster Hunter Rise, it is using 4gb of ram, but no issues with performance.
I open up wow and am on 4gb in character select.
Decided to do some travelling to test.
I am at 5gb just walking about Tazavesh.
6gb in Dornogal. Flying over to the target dummies had multiple stutters.
Practiced my rotation, no significant changes, no performance issues. Sitting at 6gb consistently, even when not doing anything.
Went to Stormwind, up to 7gb.
Went back to Dornogal, rapidly approached 8gb.
Went to the ringing deeps and azj-kahet, no changes.
Went back to stormwind, 8gb.
Founder’s Point went back down to 7.
Netherstorm went down but stayed in 7.
Legion Dalaran, back to 8.
Stormwind even higher in 8.
Dornogol, stays in 8.

I’ll be honest I don’t know exactly what you mean by system resources or hang ups. I am watching the process and performance windows in task manager as I play. I did find a page that says Resource Monitor and it’s saying wow has 12 Hard Faults per second. I don’t know what that means.
I am going to reinstall now while I sleep. I hope this information is useful.

You need to move this post to the Technical forum, there are people there who can provide help.

Thank you! I will do that now!
(I did not know there was one.)

It’s not clear what “testing with no addons” means to you. Be aware that you need to remove the addons from the directory, not disable them. You may also need to perform a UI reset (including the advanced steps) since many addons made changes to the game you can’t undo without completing that process. The high memory usage is probably due to the addons still attempting to modify the game.

o

Well, I did the UI Reset and these are the results.
4gb in character select.
5.5gb in gameplay. It approaches 6gb, but never gets there.

Edit: nevermind. I logged out and it went up to 8gb.

What are the specs of the computer you’re using?

Same here. Not just me; I’ve spoken to other folks with this happening. It feels like a memory leak issue. I’ve tried it with no addons, nothing else running, etc. Seems to do it out of nowhere but has gotten worse with the patch. Guess I’ll try a reinstall :x

I just noticed this today as well. There is certainly something going on since the newest patch.

I am using a huge amount of memory and I do not ever use addons.

I’m still focused on troubleshooting the OP’s problem. For everyone else chiming in, just as a precaution, make sure your system still meets the requirements for the game since they increased a bit with this prepatch. For instance, Windows 7 is no longer supported, CPUs need a higher clock speed, and the GPU requirements are elevated.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor (16 CPUs), ~4.2GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
I also do some light overclocking.

At this point you should probably report the RAM usage in Support > Bug Report. I haven’t noticed it myself, but my system is completely different from yours.
