First toon i make as engineer in HC, shes a gnome mage
So how do target dummies exactly work. What lvl are they? Are they lvl of the user or they have their own lvl. Like if im lvl 20 and chased by a group of lvl 25, will they resist the taunt?
And does it taunt all targets or just 1 at time?
And what’s the radius of the taunt?
Thank you!
So from my experience, this is how target dummies work. Roughly 0.5 seconds after the dummy has been spawned, it will use an AoE taunt affecting all nearby enemies (within around 10 yards).
This effect functions like mocking blow of a warrior, so enemies will attack the dummy regardless of previous threat, but it does not overwrite previous threat values. It lasts for around 4-5 seconds. After this effect runs off, the target dummy will cast an AoE growl (similar to a hunter pet) effect, that causes threat. However, this is NOT the same effect as the initial taunt. It will NOT force mobs to continue attacking the target dummy if the threat caused by the growl effect does not exceed previous threat values.
This means that previous threat tables are in effect as soon as the initial AoE taunt runs out. If you have caused too much threat to a mob, that mob will continuing attacking you instead of the dummy. Only mobs you have caused little to no threat will continue attacking the dummy after the initial effect runs out.
You can use a target dummy in two ways:
-At the start of a pull, to add another body to soak some damage for the whole duration of the dummy (time or HP)
-As a short term distraction tool during a fight to buy yourself some time or get distance between you and a mob
Advanced and Masterwork Dummies have more HP and their AoE growls effect causes more threat
Awesome.
Possible important thing to remember: I do believe that target dummies share a cooldown with a mage’s mana gems.
You learn Target Dummy at engineering skill level 85 and Advanced Target Dummy at level 185. Both can be learned from trainers not a found recipe.
The rest you got from an unacknowledged copypasta from Wowhead.
Leveling engineering is pretty expensive to be wasting it like that.
It’s not a waste if you enjoy it and have fun.
Yes, I do understand the cost. But getting to 85 is fairly simple and a blast.
teehee like a mage
I’m making a, perhaps, more oblique point.
Don’t we want to support those that like a challenge?
I didn’t think that sort leveled engi.
I meant, what character level are considered the Dummies. Is there a 100% chance they will taunt, or can the taunt fail if the mobs are 8 lvl higher than me?

what character level are considered the Dummies
Target Dummy: 20
Advanced Target Dummy: 40
Not sure about the level range on hostiles, but I’ve never had it fail to distract them.
I may be using up all my good luck on that though.
