You want tanks for 5 mans.
There are a lot more 5mans looking for tanks than Raids.
A lot of your 5man Tanks are DPS/Heal when they raid.
If a tank rolls on DPS/Heal gear and you flip out, you are wrong. Period.
If a tank rolls on DPS/Heal gear and you flip out, you are also part of why so many people who play classes that can tank 5mans and DPS/Heal in raids won’t Tank in 5mans unless it’s a guild/friend group.
When I’m actively forming a group on my druid to try and get a piece of gear for my DPS set, I do try to warn any DPS that join that I’m planning on rolling on X, etc. More often than not, I see them drop the group. They’re replaced in a heartbeat by some one who’d rather have a chance than sit in /lfg. Keep that in mind.

For real. Especially with the attitude of “we should block tank able classes from DPSing in 5 mans cause we need them to tank.” Cant have it both ways. Either let them run DPS or dont cry when they roll on DPS gear while tanking.

I’ve seen the forum posts also, but has this ever happened to you? I’m just curious, because it seems like the people who post on the forums are not very representative of the people, on average, that I run into into in the wild.
Has your experience been different?
Since hitting 60 and focusing on my raiding sets, just off the top of my head:
Tanking for a group I formed, rolled on cadaverous chest, DIDN’T WIN, Rogue in group wins but then spends the next 5 minutes complaining that I’m rolling on DPS gear as a tank, eventually leaves the group when I tell him it’s not changing.
Forming groups (this happened multiple times) when some one joins that will want something I also want in the instance, I say “FYI, I’m collecting for my DPS set on this run” followed immediately by people either just dropping group or questioning me about playing a tank and rolling on “offspec” gear, and/or saying I shouldn’t be tanking if I’m DPS spec because the groups going to fail. (obviously doesn’t understand how a feral tank/dps spec works). Some variance of this has happened multiple times.
I inform a group I’ll be rolling on X item and when it drops and I win, the DPS rages out and quits. I even had one hunter try to FD train and wipe the group because I won a roll on something they wanted.
Not every group, but it’s definitely happening and way more often than it should.

Just started leveling my palli, but I’ve tanked/healed/dps’d maybe 8 deadmines runs.
I know dm rules are often different in terms of rolling, but I roll need on the spec I’m running as, and need offspec only if everyone else has greeded and I ask first if its blue.
Exception is the int ring… I won’t need on that even as a healer unless nobody else needs it.
I let a warrior have the 2h axe even though the reward staff is bis for him. Just being nice.

Azeroth needs more people like this.
You are too nice. Tanks can say what they want from the run upfront, and if competing dps doesn’t likenot, they can form their own group.
There is nothing stopping them, especially if they are a tanking class as well.
I think this appropriate and reasonable.
I get the plight, and I think this is a far better compromise than those folks who are all like, “I’ll tank your run for 20g.” or “I’ll tank it if you pass on all greens to me.”
I’m a full resto spec healer but the tank shortage on my server is getting so bad I’m considering regearing for tanking just to finish out my set. It’s a frustrating experience. Dual specs would solve it, but people are probably still in a huff about any kind of changes.
If I join a group as a tank (Pally & Druid), then I will only need on tank gear.
I’m not into self rationalizing myself into being somehow more important than everyone else to justify being a loot wh0re.
If I want need priority on healing or dps gear I’ll join a group as one of those roles.

I was the same while leveling. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter at lower levels. I passed on the smite hammer multiple times even though it was a big one for me, even when I was tanking because a paladin in the group or warrior in the group would put it to better use and I knew it would have a bigger impact on their gameplay than mine.
However, I’m talking about at 60 when running dungeons specifically ‘for’ gear and not just leveling up. If I’m going to Scholo for cat gear, even if I’m Tanking, I’m rolling on that cat gear. people getting butthurt over it is inappropriate imo.
The primary point here is that all three tank classes may tank 5 mans to get content done but will not be tanking in Raids and we’re gathering gear for raiding.
In my particular case, I’m an OT in raids and DPS most of the time. Having both of my sets filled out is important, it’s not just happy fun time gear. I know multiple folks playing druid/warrior/paladin in a similar situation where they might tank a 5man to get gear for their actual raid spec and I hear nightmare stories from all of them about how DPS or healers flip out over them rolling on stuff.

If you want DPS gear as a Tank bring more casters then melee. Your odds of getting the DPS gear without the hastle of a rogue, warrior, paladin, hunter, or druid getting upset dramatically decreases.
So far everyone has been pretty chill about loot.
I DPS, but always make sure to avoid rolling on tanky gear or shields.
It’s a tank’s market so honestly you can dictate the terms of the group. Anyone who has a problem can feel free to try to run the dungeons without a tank
Agreed. Moreover, especially don’t cry when you find yourselves with no one to tank at all.
Sadly, the tank shortage is such a huge problem that I would gladly let a tank roll on heal gear (if it ever drops) so that I at least have the chance of going to the dungeon and rolling on it, rather than spending 1-2 hours looking for a tank. Thankfully for the Animated Chain Necklace, I won the roll.
I’ve only ever see DPS freak out over gear. Never tanks or healers. (Granted, I tank all of my PUGs, so I don’t see other tanks)
And the gear I’ve seen them freak out over? Worthless trash that isn’t even remotely close to a good item.
Example: Magister’s Belt. A Mage rolled need, and a Warlock started crying that someone would need on a BoE.

Eh the solution to cry baby DPS is simple, form the groups so you don’t have anyone in it competing with you on rolls.
DPS who whine about this are only hurting themselves.
Whatever a persons rolling on should be set up front if its not what they are running in the group.
Tanking doesnt give you the right to roll on any item, the other peoples arent there to feed you gear.
Announce it up front if you intent to roll off spec, if no one cares then cool… but you should at minimum give them the option and courtesy.
