Tanking in war within

I’m wondering. In what order would people say that tank specs are, from strongest to weakest, for this expansion atm? I would like to note that i mainly tank as dk, paladin, and demon hunter, but i’m thinking of picking up guardian druid at some point.

We wont really know until we see S1 performance…

But Icyveins has:

i hope that it does change up a bit. cause prot pally is my main go to for tanking, and if it’s considered the weakest just at this point, that’s a bit disheartening. though it seems DH and DK are sorta in the middle ground

Yeah, but Blizz is pretty quick with the tuning, especially early in the season. Normally, starting out super strong is the worst place to be because you are definitely getting nerfed.

I have seen blood dks just solo dungeon bosses on Normal when everyone wipes, and one even said they can still do that even on heroic. so i feel blood dk might be hit hard if that’s the case

All tanks are viable. Don’t be a meta slave. Play what you enjoy most. If you like your class and understand it, you’ll be better off playing it.

Example: I played prot warrior in DF when it was considered an “undesirable” tank. Still managed to get a 3k io score in s3.

I was mainly asking from curiosity. Paladin is my main go to just cause i know the right rotation for it, at least during DF. It’s just something i like to keep in mind about what ones are likely to be buffed or nerfed depending on their current state

The best tank for world 1st raiding might not be the best tank for fun raids.

The best tank for pushing titles in M+ might not be the best pug tank or the best tank for KSM.

The best tank for speed running heroics for tank bags migjt not be the best anywhere else.

People are currently dooming on prot pally.

well, i’m not a hardcore raider, i only raid every now and then with a random pub who’ll take me. M+ aren’t my thing cause i don’t like stressing. and i’m not a speedrunner either.

Pally. If you like the whole class, go with it. The dooming is all focused on the highest of high end content.

A player that understands their chosen class/spec can actually outperform the guy that jumps around just because X class or spec happens to be “the best” during that patch or expansion.

I’ve always been Frost as my preferred DPS spec for my DK. You have no idea how many times I’ve had people back in the day tell me to “go Unholy” back when it was typically the better option in a dungeon run. Problem is, it just doesn’t fit my playstyle, and anytime I did try to swap to it back when Frost was a little questionable, I’d actually underperform. As a result, I stick with Frost, and more often than not back then I’d wind up being the best DPS in the group.

Bonus points anytime I beat out the “superior” UH player if there was another DK in the group. Hell, there was one time I came in behind an UH player by only about 100 DPS. Dude kept acting like he was hot stuff until the tank told him that mocking a Frost player nearly matching his DPS output was not exactly a bragging rights moment.

In short, tier lists of the “best” specs is only about half the battle. It doesn’t mean a damn thing if you can’t play to the level expected from one of those specs due to unfamiliarity, the spec not matching your own playstyle, etc.

Play what you enjoy!

I understand. I just mainly look at what’s considered best or worst cause I do know patches tend to buff or nerf, so knowing what’s considered as either end lets me get an idea to keep an eye on patch notes in case my best spec gets nerfed in some way, or my worst spec gets buffed.

I know when I tried to tank as protection warrior back during Legion and SL (i never played during BfA, but that was due to money and tech issues), it just didn’t sit right with me, and so i swapped my warriors back to Arms and Fury. Same with Brewmaster Monk. I’m fine questing as Brewmaster, but trying to do dungeons didn’t feel the same. I know Prot Pally, Blood DK, and Vengeance DH have always been my big go tos for tanking. Guardian Druid, I admit, I never once tried, so I’m trying it out for this expansion and, right now, questing as one feels more generous than as balance druid simply cause i get more protections and defensives. I haven’t taken it into a dungeon yet though.

The meta they linked is probably based on very high keys. I’m seeing prot pals doing a lot of damage so idk

I do admit that my blood elf pally is a Templar tree prot pally, so, definitely dps focused. my draenei is probably gonna be Lightsmith tree to see how it feels, since that one seems like a co-op tree since it applies a bonus to a chosen ally

Kaarhu’s definitive tank tier list for all content you plan on doing:

  1. The tank you’re most comfortable on
  2. Everyone else
  3. The one tank you just absolutely can’t stand.

Ive actually done a few dungeons as bear druid since i made this post. Its actually quite fun. Now I’m wondering why i havent played it in the 10 years ive been on the game

Prot pally has good dmg actually can hit up to 5mil on bosses in 1 ability lol if buffed right

This is my paladin currently. She’s not geared up or anything, and i gotta rework my talents a bit. But i have been running templar hero on her, and the amount of damage i can get out cause of it is stupid high already. The fact i can tank and still drop numbers like i am is fun

(This is OP, i just switched over for this comment)

Everything seems pretty good except maybe prot pally

Impossible to know right now because a lot of the time the tank has to conform with whatever godcomp is

Well, ive been having fun on her with randoms. Though its probably cause im in templar hero and can help provide some extra burst. My draenei i know I’ll be going Lightsmith to see how it feels
