Tanking fun?

So. What’s it like to learn tanking for mythics and such? I know all the sweaty neckbeards are toxic and hateful. I swapped my shaman to resto the other day and honestly love that. Haven’t had any complaints from people in groups.
Always been curious what it’s like to tank at higher content other than just heroic dungeons. Really like the idea of prot warrior. Just don’t know how difficult it is to learn the fights and keep aggro.

Keeping aggro becomes easier if you do good damage so tier sets, good legendaries, and knowing your tank dps rotation is essential. You also have to use enough defensives/mitigation to not die.

You can also invite hunters and rogues because they will often misdirect threat to you.

All it’s a matter of perspective:

Tanking with guildies/friends that know you are learning and understand you could make a mistake here and then? Lots of fun.

Tanking with pugs/people you don’t know? Hell on earth.

Pick your poison, Mon.

Didn’t they also make changes to aggro?

Yeah that’s true, keeping aggro has never been hard for me as a tank but apparently it is easier these months.

My secret? I cheat by playing DK  if you do as much dps as the dps, with the tank aggro modifiers, you have nothing to worry about with aggro!

Depends on perspective, sometimes being a DPS is boring because all you do is kill, pummel spell casts and maybe CC if able.

Tanks get to do all that and control pulls throughout the dungeon which is arguably more interesting and keeps you awake, not to mention watching threat incase somebody is about to rip threat and be ready to grab it back if possible.

So it’s easier and more comfortable to be a DPS but eventually it can be boring where as the responsibility of a tank can be stressful as you push into harder content or if you’re grouped with clowns because you have to try and pull it together but the role itself can be interesting and fun if everything is going right.

Tanking is only fun if:

  1. Your a natural leader
  2. Can take abuse and criticism for mistakes
  3. Have thic skin that doesn’t let insults get to you
  4. Are aware of everything going on including right mobs to pull and not overpulling extra mobs to waste timer, knowing routes, watching aggro, etc.

Pugs will bully you for the smallest mistakes.

Hit buttons, hit reduction button when HP moves or enemy is doing a clear attack at you (stun batons in streets, soul crush in DoS).

Also people are stupid in low dungeons, you don’t know what the best route is, neither do they. More than likely they are just waiting for something to be pulled so they can press buttons.

Over time you just get a feel for it, you learn where buttons are best used and what mobs you fight and don’t.

I was gonna say and then you git gud and ppl beg you to tank their keys but pugging can still be a nightmare. If you make even a smol mistake ppl can lose their minds and write you off.

Op, start out small and keep going as you get more comfortable.

I cheat by having the dungeon route pulled up on a second monitor.

I only find M+ tanking fun. Raids not so much.

It’s fun with a group of folks that get it.

Did keys yesterday at 240 with 270 folks, a MD helps but it wasn’t hard to hold aggro. Prot Warrior DPS is actually insane.

Hehehe yay cheating! That’s what M+ is all about!

Where are all these people criticizing the tanks?

I think it’s happened to me like a dozen times in a dozen years.

Tanking can be really fun or really horrible depending on your group. If your M+ group is really skilled or really laid back it will be a great time…but when your M+ group is neither, it’s an incredibly stressful experience.

It’s best to learn with people you know that won’t become upset by mistakes as you learn the dungeons and routes.

Instant access to groups is quite nice.

These are quite rare. If you encounter them you can simply ignore, report, and find another group in about…20-30 seconds?

I actually love raid tanking. Its really fun too me for some reason.

Not nearly as awful as you think it is.

If you have zero urge to ask questions, watch videos, read a dungeon guide… then all you need to do is JOIN a lower mythic key like a +2 as a dps and just watch what the tank does. This is how I learned to tank dungeons for the most part. Now and then you’ll get a tank who won’t be great to learn from or mimic, but at least in my experience, most know what they’re doing and copying them with slight changes will be fine.

Some tanks will triple pull and the group is fine. Remember that that is NOT what is expected of you. In fact sometimes that can be an awful thing to do.

Understand the mechanics, try to have some sense of % needed, which you can learn from watching other tanks, and know your kit so that YOU aren’t ever the reason for a wipe.

Good luck
