Tanking For Gold

I am seeing more and more tanks advertising 50-60 dungeon runs, where they will only tank for gold or if allowed to need roll on all items. WTS TANKING SERVICE 20g/RUN etc.

Now we all know there is a shortage of tanks willing to PUG, hence the demand dictates supply - but what are the thoughts about this approach?

Supply and demand works itself out.

How much gold are fools paying for runs in retail? No difference here IMO.

They can do whatever they want.

People will either pay them, or they won’t.

As someone willing to tank in the upper levels, I don’t mind some compensation. But if no one wants to pay that, I’m ok DPSing and questing.

If you’re a good tank, I see no reason why you can’t charge for it or put conditions on your groups. If you are worth the money, people will pay.

Normally it would, but I don’t think it does in classic since

a) only warriors are the only good tanks out of the viable ones
b) leveling a warrior is a pain

I think it’s pretty lame personally, and wouldn’t do it myself. However, if others are doing it, I have no problem with them.

They can do whatever they want. I doubt they get too many takers but whatever, tanks need gear too and there are plenty than run for free. Roll a tank, join a better guild, make some friends. Nobody is forced to pay for anything.

warriors are definitely NOT the only good tanks.

And this right here is the attitude that creates a shortage of tanks.

“I can tank this dungeon!”
“You’re not a warrior with a shield! GTFO!”

Some of my favorite tanks have been druids. I’ll take one any time in any dungeon.

Lol your mentality is why tanks can charge 20g a run.

Bears are the best dungeon tank by a large margin.

guys i never said other classes arent viable tanks or that i wouldnt take one

i said that the ability of supply to meet demand is going to be affected by the balances between tank specs, since the demand is going to be in part a demand for warrior tanks

and that demand is going to help sustain the culture of paying for runs

No, you just said that warriors are the only good ones.

I’ve never charged a copper to tank a dungeon. Don’t think I ever would.

But if I’m not really in the mood to tank, I could see myself being persuaded by a no contest loot offer of something rare.

Plate costs more to repair.

If they want to try that they can.

I can see someone rolling an alt going for that. But most people don’t have the money for training, much less buying a tank.

And at 60, you should be in a guild. So I’m not sure who they are trying to appeal to.

in cata tanks were short, blizzards solution? give tanks a bonus loot bag

I can really only speak for myself, but If I was to tank a non-guild run in a dungeon for which I couldn’t find a gear upgrade and had no objectives…yeah I’d want payment or it’s literally a waste of the time i could spend gearing for our next raid. I’ve considered doing this rather than straight gold farming at times, but never pulled the trigger on the idea.

However, tanking for gold should be treated carefully. Again, I can only speak for myself, but you should consider yourself to be the typical professional if this is your plan. check all the boxes:

-know the dungeon well
-gather a list of objectives from everyone at the start, and do all of those
-fully prepare: full stack of arrows, fresh repair, etc.
-Be geared enough that you can reduce the challenge of the dungeons. Overgearing isn’t necessary, but they can’t pay you and then struggle just to keep you breathing.
-finally, PASS ON ALL NON BOE LOOT.

Yep. That last one’s a stinger. But if I’m gonna do this, I’m considering myself on the job. If the group pays me 20 gold or so to tank, I’m not going to take any typical loot from the dungeon unless they explicitly permit me to roll. I’m also not going to add any objectives to their list: I can’t justify tanking BRD for gold, then asking if they’ll take time to deliver me to the black anvil. If they want Incendius and I happen to have some crafting mats, that’s a lucky circumstance, but you’re on the job. The group gets full control of objectives.
