Tanking Consumables

What is everyone using when tanking in high mythic keys? I chose stamina flask over primary stat because of the massive price difference, 400 vs 1200 on my server. Would pure stat make that big of a difference?

I have 8/8 +16 timed, having used:

Armor Kit
Embalmer’s Oil
Spectral Flask of Stamina
Steak a la Mode

Pushing higher into 17-18 I am thinking of adding utility potions to my arsenal. Should I go for Potion of Hardened Shadows (275 armor) or Potion of Spectral Strength (190 strength)?

As a prot pally.

Never stam flask.

Stams value is the abilty to survive from a “combo” or “one hit”. Any window that no heal can happen between that you die on that the hp from a stam flask will make that window livable. In m+ this case is so rare basicly dosen’t happen. If you died either you where to low when a effect happened or you din’t have a cd going. In both cases you are more than likely overkilled by more than the amount added by stam flask. While a STR flask not only boosts your dps every time which matters in m+ it adds survival via more attackpower, all our skills including the mit from SOTR scales with attackpower via main stat. This includes healing from WoG also. As such you are losing mit at ALL points in the instances and a constant dps increase that is important for m+ in order to get more stam in the ultra rare case you die by just enough a stam flask would of saved you. But that STR increasing mit even in that case assuming the damage was phys would of saved you anyways. So to make stams case even more niche the damage must be spell damage overkilling you and less than 50% of your hp droped via phs. As m+ the VAST majoirty of your damage is phs you can start to see how pointless stam is. You only use if you constantly dieing to a set spell mechanic on a raid boss to get by that fight than swap to str the moment you no longer need it.

This is made even worse when using holy shield as even vs spell stam value drops further. You should be using holy shield even in m+ unless you are pushing into the 18+ keys and even than unless its fort so your kiting more than face tanking holy shield will win over BH. BH should only be used when you reach the point you are kiting so much you cant keep threat on the mobs during your kite. As such the holy power gen from BH when not in melee becomes required in order to maintain agro.

Armor kit is a yes

Embalmers oil is a NO. Same reason as stam flask. The healing is next to nothing. You are only causing your healing to overheal more no healer will ever adjust helaing to not top you of to make embalmers worth it. All it dose is add overhelaing in 99% of cases. While sharping stone or weight stones if a blunt weap add attack power which again scales all our skills and guess what the avg hps added to WoG that is CONTROLABLE is GREATER than the hps added via embalmers oil BEFORE adding in the mit via SOTR and the dps. There is no question what is better.

The steak is fine. Our 2nd stats are close enough that so long as not picking crit your fine. Vers is better than mastery in m+ due to kiteing time and time not in cons. That being said even if over the 20% guideline for haste should be using haste food. Its still a greater dps gain than vers most of the time you can sim to see the difference, dps matters alot in m+ as the diff in survival from food will not save you 99% of the time but the diff in dps most def can take 1-3 secs of a key and that can matter quite often, while dps is a survival gain as if the mobs die 1 auto faster here and there that is more survival than you will ever get from a food buffs direct survival gain. On top haste remains at least on par for survival gain as haste over the 20% guideline. This is true even for your ring enchants btw. Which is why you see even the best prot pallys in m+ which have over 20% haste still using haste enchants. This is true for gems also that I see you have vers not haste.

See this guy one of the best prot pallys for m+, quite literally the person with the highest parses and keys for prot pally.

The best food buff is 18 str thou.

You should be using spec str + invis pot in m+, with gunboots for long movement periods such as DoS. Armor pots are good for the rare pull you don’t got cds for and need a extra edge but those are better countered via party aid to your kite. Eg trents/binding. As armor dose nothing at all to spell damage hits. In most every case you dieing is a issue of not kiting or not using a cd correctly and the armor pot is not needed so the survival gain that is lesser from str but but the significantly better dps gain is the prio.

Cost per run thou before you add prepots should be adding a aug rune. You do the cta when ever its up and you get a few for “free” along with gold to pay for other consumables. While even buying them the cost of a aug rune is compairable to a pot, but the pot only lasts 25 secs augs last the run if you don’t die. Netting you vastly more avg stat gain. Even if you die mid way the rune was often worth it assuming your not dieing pull 1.

Otherwise the next biggest gain is to take eng as a proff its the only proff that stands out in m+ and really in combat in general. It has in DoS a way for you to turn off frogger, While saving you money on not needing to buy gunboots (also gliders in the world), While giving you a wormhole to get to every instance with ease (and your daillys to boot) allowing you to save time between runs. While giving you a battle rez (its hard to use as a tank) this battlerez can save wipes and as such siginificant amount of time. Even if you got a different brez class being able to rez them is worth. You can use final stand than rez no matter the combat situation.

You could use the BFA greater flasks if you were wanting to save gold. 38 main stat is better than stamina.

Strength is going to be the top consumable for multiple targets, but Potion of Phantom Fire is going to be the best for single target and you should use Shadowcore oil because of this. The healing from embalmer’s isn’t bad, but more damage is going to be a little bit more beneficial in the grand scheme of things. Your ability to heal yourself should be sufficient in addition to a healer.

Yeah I knew primary stat would be better than stamina. What was holding me back from it was the sheer cost difference of Spectral Power flasks and Spectral Strength potions compared to the stamina version. You bring a lot of good points and I’ll have to reconsider the benefit-cost ratio.
