Tanking Advice

Hey guys, so I’m making this post because I wanna get into tanking and do high m+ and raids one day in the future but I’ve never done tanking before since I been on the fence from trying it since I have been nervous. If you have done tanking before how did you get over tanking anxiety if you had it before?

Personally, I would just turn off your chat if you go tanking lol. People are mean as hell around here and it’s better to just not listen to it as long as you’re grabbing aggro as much as you can. And poppin’ those sweet, sweet CDs.

Short answer: Don’t.

Sad answer: “Dont be new on other people’s time” is unfortunately the first and most ridiculous unwritten rule of tanking in WoW, but it is a rule.

Helpful answer: Play with friends AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. The current M+ incarnation screams “no really, get in comms with friends,” and while PUGing is of course logistically supported, WoW putting delves in the game seems to have freed them from any sense of obligation in building an approachable M+ game because “if you have no friends to play M+ with, you have delves now!”

Suggestion: Speaking of delves, they are good practice, as are follower dungeons.

Recommendation: Look for communities like the dungeon dojo. If you don’t have an organized group of friends, this is a good midpoint!

That’s all I got without getting into an essay on the busted social compact of PUGing in modern WoW. I have been a tank main since WOTLK, and this is my wisdom for you.

I’ve been tanking for years and 99% of my dungeon parties are successful and stressfree. As a tank all you have to do is keep arggo on you. no one cares about your damage or if you’re interrupting.

I think there can be a lot of anxiety with failure in this game. The reality is though, you’re going to fail and keep failing. Along the way that will diminish but every time you push into new territory there’s going to be some failures along the way.

People are gonna say things and it doesn’t change the fact they fail too. Just keep going and it’ll work out and you’ll find those successes too.

Start low and work your way up.
Watch dungeon guides
Watch tank guides
Practice pratice practice
You arent gonna jump into 12s and tank right away and thats fine. The most impotant thing you can do as a tank in mplus is know the routes and mob%. And dont listen to any toxic people in your groups if they are so much better why arent they doing higher keys? just keep at it you got this

I dont understand what game you guys are playing. I don’t fail dungeons, what anxiety is there with tanking? Watch a few videos on youtube and you have everything down-pack.

Do it while you’re leveling up to learn the dungeons. Start at lower keys and work your way up. You’ll need to memorize a route for each dungeon to get %, can help to just run the same dungeon a few times in a row to hammer it in. Just start doing it and don’t worry what people say or turn off chat, ultimately you’re just learning like anyone else. Most people are polite, I wouldn’t worry about it that much.

This.

And I will add, don’t tank anything a party member says personally because they will treat the tanks and healers like crap. They can’t help themselves.

Like GitGudFox always says: You can’t skip over starting off bad, but you don’t have to BE good to GET good.

I just don’t have tanking anxiety. I set up the pulls when tanking so I legit have everything fed to me on a platter whether it be the interrupts to hit or where and when to pump my cooldowns. It’s the only role that doesn’t rely on another person to maximize its potential as every other role is reliant on the tank to do so.

FarmVille. Isn’t that obvious?

Every mistake is a chance to learn.

It’s something I like to think as I play. I was very anxious when I first started and even anxious still when I’m trying something that might be harder for me to do.

Just try your best and keep learning. Maybe if you have somebody to go with to practice at first that could help. If not I would say in party that I’m learning, just to put it out there. Lol

Wow, I was raised so different from you guys, there is literally nothing anyone can say to me ingame that would cause me to have depression. Like, how can tanking cause anxiety? This is beyond me.

Well, see, some folks attribute the other players with humanity and possess empathy for those humans. It’s possible to take that too far, sure, but if you feel zero responsibility when tanking… you may be part of the problem, friend.
