I know you are right because if I could blacklist flag carrying maps while playing Prot pally or Blood DK Id have a great time on those specs(almost never be the ideal taget and get ignored, free to do what I want).
Here is the problem. Let’s say you aren’t on one of the “tank-killer” classes and while you are in the process of taking quarry in DWG some tank comes flying in on their super fast Blitz mount and stops you from capping.
What do you do?
Stay and fight the tank in a stalemate fight the rest of the match.
Leave and let the tank just get the node for free.
Call for help and overcommit numbers at quarry to kill the tank and lose elsewhere on the map
The only real option is to try to take it with some CC, but some classes don’t have those tools or those tools are on long cooldowns. Tanks belong in FC maps. They are zero fun to fight.
I’m not going to spend time fighting a tank wanting to cap a node. I’ll let him cap it, then send the tank killers. The possibility of the tank getting support is close to 10%. See, this is where the problem is for most players: insisting on spending time on unproductive plays.
Playing tank can be a lot of fun in bgs. Its more objective based and more of finding where you can be the most pain in their butt. Distraction plays are fun if damage or healing isnt so much your thing.
Ok, and what if the tank is on you? It’s not like you can just walk away.
You’re forced to fight them until one of you dies or they decide to let you leave.
Some specs can’t get away if they want to, especially if the tank is something like a Blood DK. All the grips and chains of ice… you’re not going anywhere if they don’t want you to.
They can fully trap you in combat with them and waste your time and there’s zero counter play for most specs. I suppose something like a rogue could cloak/vanish, but most classes don’t have those tools to exit combat
Hrmmmm. The game isn’t designed for 1v1. So you can’t expect all DPS to be able to solo all Tanks. But in group fighting most Tanks are mediocre.
I think Prot War/Paladin are immensely weak into magic. Prot Warrior has virtually no magic damage mitigation and Prot Paladin ooms through Word of Glory.
Venge actually has pretty bad survivability all around, especially into RDPS (because it needs uptime to heal) and has to use a lot of CDs to deal with Rogues.
Brewmaster pretty bad into MM and only a touch better into casters.
BDK is only tanky if it Death Strikes every 3 seconds, so anything that creates distance or disarms them will melt them. Normally a BDK is going godmode because a bunch of melee are letting them get Death Strike uptime. If 2+ RDPS are kiting a BDK it’s not a tank at all.
Guardian is the only tanky tank because it can heal on the run, has good defensives, can use defensives in Stuns, has passive Stun reduction, has massive HP pools, and amplifies healing received from all sources.
No, I don’t expect dps to solo tanks. However, I think it’s a bit excessive that one single tank can tie up multiple dps in an endless battle if they want to.
Sure you can walk away, but that leaves them free to cap the node/base/resource. Is that our best response to a tank approaching a base? Leave and let them have it because they won’t die?
Calling for help to take them down usually means over allocating resources to take down one player, leaving other bases/nodes vulnerable. There isn’t any recourse against a decent/geared tank except to waste time and resources hoping maybe you can take them down.
Even if it’s multiple dps vs the tank, a good tank won’t die. It’s very obvious BGs and PvP in general were not designed with tanks in mind.
They aren’t as much of a problem in rated BGs. The mechanics of some of the Blitz maps makes them intolerable because they won’t just be sitting one base for the entire match.
To chime in on this, Bear can off-heal for crazy amounts as well. They can also clone, stun, stealth, vortex, spell-lock and wild-charge to players up cliffs.
That’s a lot more utility outside of Tanking, than what the other Tanks have, yes?
Might just be my own sample size, but I don’t see a lot of tanks outside of epics (especially Ashran) and Warsong/TP. Very occasionally in a Solo Shuffle.
It isn’t a skill issue when a tank rolls up on you and you cannot win, cannot get away, and also cannot be killed by them. You can’t deal enough damage to take them down, and they can’t deal enough to take you down.
If you’re a spec with self healing tools, it can very well be an endless stalemate. Adding in another dps doesn’t help as they’re not designed to die in a 2v1 or even 3v1 depending on spec.
Tanks don’t really have a good place in PvP. It’s a gameplay mode designed around killing the enemy, and tanks are designed to do neither of those things. They don’t kill and they can’t be killed.
They have no real place in PvP and it shows. Maybe if Blizzard wanted to make room for them, or somehow figure out a way to incorporate their roles into PvP (capture the flag is a good example), but as it stands, they really don’t do much but waste everyone’s time.
