Hey Bubble,
Do you just want to “tank” for PvP? Like just absorb damage?
So the three tanks would be…
Druid/Paladin/Warrior.
Druids - Great mobility and survival due to their ability to morph into bear and travel and cat form for mobility. They can be tanky with bear form and have massive armor. They have a stun in bear form.
Paladins. I heard protection paladins are an absolute nightmare for a rogue. Protection paladins also offer great support to your team with freedom and different blessings. You have a reduced Hammer of Justice from your talents, so that’s pretty nice too. I think they also have a buff or something that redirects damage to them! And as always. All of the auras! So you can switch those auras on the fly.
Warrior. Warriors are mobile. You can charge/intercept to anyone. You have a five second stun, which is so dumb. You have an interrupt, which is amazing! I believe your shield slam has a 50% chance to dispel too which is great too.
All of the tanks are really cool and work in different ways. If you want to be a brick wall. I’d choose warrior. Swifty had a video of him PVPing a T2 warrior with Thunderfury and it took him so long to get him down.
A tank “spec” for Warrios will not be generally useful in PvP, but they do have their purposes such as flag running in WG or tanking an AV boss.
Make it work for you! Best thing I can tell ya. You have a pocket healer? Top end gear and enchants? God tier wep? Build it. Play it. Adjust as necessary to what you intend to do. You want HWL? Build a team. You just want to hold your own in bg’s? Befriend a healer. Make it work to a standard you set for yourself.
Since in PVP you are not concerned with threat, I would personally go druid. Plenty of soaking damage, ability to pop over to normal form to heal and HOT yourself before swapping to cat or bear again. Plus stealth, plus buff, plus unending breath if you like to lurk in water.
I say Warrior or Pally strictly for Thunderfury in pvp being something to fear. However if you want to go the full PvP route, then go Druid. They are by far the best for that sort of thing.
Only warriors have access to the most powerful PvP debuff in the game, mortal strike. They also get an instant cast AoE fear. Warriors are also the only viable raid tanks and you need raid gear to dominate PvP. Kind of removes the decision making when considering PvP tanks.
Druids can be fun if you stack your stam quite a bit, it can take a while to kill you. Warriors would be another top choice in my opinion.
Hmmmm pvp isn’t as simple as just being a tank.
Rogue will be best tank in pvp.
Druids are already one of the best classes for pvp because of the ability to flag run and heal, even in a feral spec. Building a tank spec will be easy enough while also picking up healing talents and/or dps talents to be either support or damage in pvp.
Warlock best pvp tank.
@OP
Don’t play a tank in PVP for damage or burst, you’re not going to have that; they are not built to kill other players or even NPC’s… They are for tanking raids and Dungeons and world bosses.
I have seen tank talents used in a way that worked out really good, and I have seen tank spec’s work in PVP but not for the use of killing players, but instead to do things like Guarding flags, Holding the flag in WSG or Tanking the raid bosses in AV.
Outside of those very specific applications you’re going to be hard pressed to feel useful when not in an organized group or AV…
Regarding AV it’s also dependent on what version we get; this will determine just how useful you are. You will be useful no matter what in AV, but the thing is, that usefulness is escalated or reduced based on the version… The older original designs have a bit more PVE, and that makes your job actually more useful, while the late model AV has less PVE.
Druids and Warriors are likely the best choice if you want to truly “TANK” in PVP, but Paladin hybrid builds can be very destructive in PVP in a niche role vs melee or so long as they have an idiot melee feeding them reckoning charges.
Druid’s can also be useful for running flags in solo Q for BG’s but these are not exactly a pure tank, they’re a wonky hybrid build that’s bespoke for WSG, but can be useful in AB / AV when played by a good player.
Warriors have a role in AV like mentioned, but their role in AB is limited to guarding flags… They are bar-none the most difficult tank to kill, and as a result are fantastic flag carries in organized PVP, but outside of an organized group good luck getting some one to clear your snares / heal you. If you do have a pocket healer you can certainly make the opposing team work very hard giving your team an easier time of winning…
I am not trying to deter your tank dreams, but just go into this knowing what to expect.
druids were the best flag runners, but they dont just sit in bear form. most people think its better to put more points into resto, but you can also go down to leader of the pack and make that work too
Yes, but you need to spec 31 points into the arms tree for MS, which means respecing and defeating the purpose of being a PvP tank. You will be better off with a 2H if you have MS. Also if you are a raid tank, chances are you won’t have much gear to deal damage in PvP as there is no way you will convince your guild to give a tank a dps plate piece over a fury warrior.
Edit: Druids do PvP tanking better anyways with higher armor and hp. Your advantage as a warrior tank is to not get crit or crushed by a boss through shield block, which doesn’t do squat against magic damage. Shield block is also only 2 charges (1 if not speced for it) and only works from the front, which means rogues can bypass it.
i plan on being a tank in pvp once i have full naxx bis gear and Thunderfury for good measure.
I’ll answer the OP:
Tanks are garbage in PVP. The only thing they might be useful at is outlasting their opponents. Which would only work against melees because hunters/mages can just kite and hybrids/warlocks will outlast them. There’s no kill pressure, no kill potential, only being a beefy boy that will get kited by everyone and their mother and won’t manage to do anything. You aren’t even that good of a flag carrier because you have no mobility as a tank FC. Druid FCs aren’t the same as a tank, they’re tanky healer hybrids.
A good druid is just about the most obnoxious thing to fight.
Yes… Because thunderfury is a super realistic goal for everyone.
The best defense is a strong offense. MS warrior does the job just fine. A 2h MS warrior was our main fc for rank grind premade in wsg. If you’re planning on rank grinding at all then your best option is MS warrior. You’re still pretty tanky. A shield doesn’t do squat against all the mages, locks, and spriests you’ll be facing.
