Hey guys! Im planning on main tanking Oynxia! Just a couple of er questions! Do I just keep her on the north wall while she’s on the ground? Also what’s the 2nd tank suppose to do just there Incase I die?
I understand her fight for aggro mechanics. Just worried about being in the right place at the right time mostly!
Edit: I sat in as a off tank, the tank kept her at the north wall every time she was on the ground, but the group ended up disbanding before we could down her.
Positioning? Just Leeroy Jenkins it.

There is in depth guides on Onyxia online not trying to sound like a d bag but it offers way more than anyone can here
Lolol! Could you link it? I can’t seem to find one that specifically outlines tanks placement in the raid. Just talks about how taunting doesn’t work and how aggro works.
I was reading about it the other day wowhead offers a map to show you how it’s done, all the abilities for each phase, proper raid spacing, etc

Yup, North end of the cave with you back to the wall is the best place to tank.
Offtanks are there to grab whelps for the most part, or to pick it up if you die.

Awesome thank you!!! And when she’s in the air while I’m main tanking should I be under her? That’s what I saw the main tank do, just wasn’t sure if that’s the correct place to be during that phase.
Hehe, under her… That’s what I like.

Right in the middle of the whelps.
Your DPS and healers will love you for it.
look up a guide on deep breath
Just help hit whelps and gain a full rage bar so when she lands randomly in P3, you can run over to her and dump your whole rage bar to tank the rest. You don’t need to sit under her the entire time, DBM will tell you when she’s going to land.

Awesome thank you! Yes I love the DBM Easter egg with the meme lol.
Onyxia has a resetting agro mechanic so I’m guessing your tank is just trying to get agro back as she is landing and drag her back to the phase one wall again to resume dps. If dps attack her when she lands all will go to hell so everyone needs to be on the same page to succeed. As others have said the main tank and off tank gather the whelps and the offtank keeps them busy and the main tank focuses Onyxia when she lands again. As the offtank gathers and the aoe comes in to clear the mobs the main tank will be dragging the boss at the same time

Yeah, help out with whelps in P2, try not to get hit by breath or fireballs. I believe the fireballs wipe her agro… So if you get hit by one in P2 it will make it more dicey to pick her up and get her in position for P3.
P3 is where the pugs usually go to hell. Nobody should do any DPS until the tank has gotten her into position. Use a threat meter and if any DPS start to get too close to the tanks, have them stop dpsing completely for a while. Doing 0 dps for a couple seconds is better than wiping the raid.

Her aggro isn’t understood that well in older guides. Her finicky aggro is related to the engulfing flames she does in P2. This will start out on whoever had threat when she went up in the air and has an aggro reduction/drop mechanic linked to it.
You need to have a full rage bar when she drops and have people quickly turn her out of the raid if they have aggro while you try and get her back.
The best way we’ve found for this to work in a full raid is to just have 2-3 tanks at the top of her threat list in P1->P2. If the raid is full with a balanced amount of ranged you should be able to transition her before she wipes threat on the tanks and tank 2 or 3 should have her pretty quickly when she lands.
In smaller/split runs this isn’t practical so whoever gets her when she drops needs to very quickly get her our of the raid and just hope the tank can get her back quickly. It helps to use the whelps as a rage battery in P2 (IE tank them but don’t kill them) and follow Ony around after she dumps aggro on you to try and build yourself back up the list. The problem here is if you’re slow to transition you’ll eventually get to the top of her list and get knocked off it again.
Fury Warriors and Ferals should be in defensive stance with a shield and bear when she comes down as well to pick her up and tank if it’s on them.
I tank her with my back against the north wall. The off-tank is there just in case something goes horribly wrong. Otherwise he is just DPSing and providing demo shouts and thunderclaps.
During Phase 2, the off tank takes the right side welps and I take the left side welps and just gather them up for AOE.
Phase 3 is the fun part of trying to grab her again and bring her back to the north wall.
We are actually hitting up Ony again tomorrow night 8PM EST if you want to watch how we do it. There are also vids on my page as well.
