Taming beasts.....am I missing something??

I just rolled a hunter (not this toon), and she's now lvl 11. At lvl 10 I got the ability to tame animals. All I have is the raptor I started out with. I dismiss the raptor and try to tame something else and I get the message that I have too many pets already with me. What am I missing here? How can I tame another animal like a scorpid or something? Any help would be great, thanks.

I may be wrong, but I believe when you start out you are only eligible to have ONE pet. As you gain levels, you will eventually be able to have up to 5 at a time that you can summon (at lvl 85). You probably don't get the option to tame a second pet for quite a few more levels. You can always abandon the raptor :)

You should put it in your stable (never abandon your first pet :P). then you can tame it.

At level 18 you get "Call Pet 2" where you can carry two pets at once.

Yes, you're missing something. Quite a bit, actually. Don't feel bad though, the game nowadays is really bad at teaching you the basics. Here's what they are...

1) You, as a Hunter, have access to a "active roster" of pets that you can call in the field. At level 11, the maximum you can have in the field is one; you can get more as you level. Always buy the "Call Pet x" skill when it's available; the x is the pet slot that gets unlocked. At 80 you can have 5 available, and you can buy Call Pet 2 around level 18.

2) In towns, usually close to the inn, you will see a NPC with green text over his head at all times. The title will read "Stable Master" - and this is where you will store the pets you have that aren't active. Your stable has 20 slots and cannot be expanded, so choose carefully what pets you want to store. This isn't Pokemon - you can't collect 'em all, by design.

3) To tame a new pet, you must have a slot open in your active roster for your pet to go into once tamed. Since you only have ONE active roster slot at this time, you must visit a Stable Master and store your current one before you can tame another. If you REALLY don't care about your current one, you can select it and right-click on it's portrait. From the menu that appears, you can select "Abandon" to get rid of it. WARNING: Once you get rid of it in this way, any modifications you've made (skill tree selections, names, etc) will be lost permanently! You get a confirm dialog as well - so make sure that's what you want to do!

4)If you're worried about how you're going to get to where your new pet is without the support of one (a problem for BM; much less so for MM/SV) - you can tame a throwaway one; that is, tame one temporarily once your current pet is stabled; then abandon it when you get to where the one you really want is.

5) BE AWARE: Some pets (yes, even some in the lowbie areas; as a example see "The Kurken") are labeled Exotic; they can ONLY be tamed by a Beast Mastery hunter with the Beast Master (31-point) talent. That means, level 69 or higher.

In-game, you can use the Beast Lore skill to see if a particular NPC is tamable or not; if yo can't cast Beast Lore on it, it's not tamable :). Out-of-game, you can use as a reference www.petopia.com. That Web site's been around just about as long as WoW itself has, and has been continually updated throughout the years. It's a invaluable reference on pets - looks, buffs/debuffs, ares where found - everything's there, or in sites linked from there.

How exactly do you tame a pet? I am able to cast the spell, but the Stag that I am trying to tame does not respond. Do they tame immediately? I have my cat with me--do I need to stable him before I go out and try to tame another pet? OR can I have more than one pet follow me around?
Thank You--very helpful.
Can you have more than one pet summoned . . . like walking around with you? or are you limited to only having one and the Call Pet feature is just to have the availability of different pets?
You are limited to one called pet at a time. HOWEVER, the hunter trainer in the human starter area does have two (2) wolves out.

Oh for the old days of SWG when I was able to have my three Greater Sludge Panthers called at the sametime.

Great post. Thank you :)
I'm having the same issue. I'm reading elsewhere online about a quest involving a Taming Rod that my Hunter Trainer is supposed to provide me in a quest to learn how to Tame? However no such Quest Appears, and I don't have anything called a Taming Rod..

What am I missing?

Here is the thing (and I might be wrong), when you hit level 10 you go to your hunter trainer and you will get a quest. He will give you a taming rod and will ask you to tame some pets and bring to him. On competition of this quest you will get an ability to tame pets.

Well this is exactly what the case was few years ago. I am not 100% sure if it is still the case.
BTW of you dont know, hunters used to not have any pet at start of game back in the days. We used to get a pet at level 10 onwards.
Yeah I'm just skipping the whole quest. I managed to tame a pet without any rods. The key seems to be to not die before you finish casting the love spell or whatever it is.

P.S. These are really nicely designed forums :D

use the skill beast lore on the animal - it tells you wither you can tame it or not. To my knowledge stags are not tamable
I never got the tame quest and I'm now lvl 17.. There's not even any quests for my hunter when I go to the trainer

This thread was made in 2011.
Make sure you’re not trying to tame exotic beasts. You should be able to tame pets at level 10

Dismissing your pet does NOT make room for another to be tamed. You must abandon it. Then you can tame another. This of course if you’re in an x-pac where you can carry only one pet at the same time.

Most likely, there’s no point in responding to OP as this topic was created in 2011.

I would assume that the problems they brought up have been figured out by now.

I gotta admit, I’m kind of impressed they found a ten year old thread like this to respond to.
