Talent Trees, why did they go?

It was a system that worked. Straight forward and simple! Instead of doing away with them the Devs could have updated them.

Now we have a [enter explicit description here] system that’s more pointless that anything they’ve done yet.

Talent trees, to me, made it feel more rewarding to level. You could also mix your build around and see what comes of it.

Just don’t understand why they did away with them.

Why?

Blizzard please bring them back.

Ion said somewhere that they changed the coding and the trees are hidden in “dn”. Said they’re working on a fix. The interview is somewhere…

People will say that talent trees were an illusion of choice and that they were useless because everyone used the same cookie cutter builds. And to a degree that’s not wrong.

My issue was that I had the choice and they took that. Even if the majority built the same, there were those that didn’t. There were those that tried new things and went different ways, and they removed that.

The removed them because they were hard to balance, you got weird niche builds that would pop up from time to time due to unintended synergies.

On top of that most of the choices didn’t really make a tangible difference, you really only had a handful of talents for each spec that actually mattered. Putting 1 point into 1% to dodge/crit/parry/hit/etc. was basically not noticeable.

The new talents are not perfect because there still are obvious cookie cutter builds but I think they are much better due to all the choices actually feeling impactful.

You have just as much choice now and maybe even more. The old talents were passive bonuses except the 11,21,31 ect talents. Passives are baked into the class and now you can just flat pick the important talents.

They probably think we’re too stupid to use effective builds on our own. Same thing with why glyphs are now only cosmetic based.

Talent trees weren’t a real choice, just an illusion of a choice that would set up players who didn’t look up the illusion to fail.

Now there’s less of an illusion and the “not a real choice” is closer to a real choice depending on playstyle, or environment.

I still prefer the appearance of the old trees, though, and the flexibility they offered for troll builds.

This is all part of a big conspiracy to dumb down the population of the planet

Personally, I just had more fun with the old talent trees.

The modern talent trees are alright, I don’t dislike them, but overall fun? I think the old talent tree system was much more fun.

I got to goof off with weird builds merely for my own amusement and leveling felt far more rewarding.

tho I wish azarite armor change when you change spec But that wishful thinking

They really need to bring back +1% increases and the illusion of choice.

This is the real reason for the changes. Having your build change because of a recent hot fix to talents for some unintended combo was always a PITA.

I actually prefer the new talents as it still allows for some flexibility. Don’t feel like incorporating a new skill into your rotation? Choose the passive buff on that line of talents. If you really want to min/max you can change up your talents for every boss fight. I’m good with these changes.

Today’s talents are just as much of an “illusion”

There is a clear path to optimal dps. Many choices are clearly inferior and have no advantage over their counters. So if the trees were an illusion so are our choices now

The biggest reason is that players will just theorycraft the “best” builds anyway, and everyone will use them making the talent trees themselves more or less superfluous. To say that trees gave players choices was an illusion because no one is going to run end game content or get invited to raids or keystone mythics unless they are using what the community has determined to be the optimal build.

With that said, I agree with you that they were more fun than the current talent system.

I don’t think we’ll ever see them again in WoW unless it’s something expansion related like the Artifacts. I do hope they bring them back for more single player fare like Diablo 4.

Say what you want about the talent tree but it felt good to get that one point every level as you leveled up to max level. Earning that one skill through planning and playtime felt good. The way talents are right now might be good for end game but they suck so much for leveling.

No idea. I miss them every day though…

I think the inability to cross-spec is actually what is missed - the actual talents/process of how you choose the talents is essentially just secondary issue.

I wouldn’t say they worked for anything other than leveling.
For leveling they were ideal, because you’d get a small power increase every level.
Now, you have WAY more decisions at max level than you would have back in those days.
There were ways to have adjusted the old talents to make that less true, but still you would be looking at a tree that stretched for miles now.
The way they were in Cata was a sad affair, and a lot of the purpose of them was taken out when they truncated them like this.

Really, the problem is the level cap.
The game plays like its exclusively about max level now, and if you agree with that then the new talent tree should be considerably better, as there is no bloat and much more balance between the options.

If you only care about RPG stuff like making your own custom build regardless of what was effective, then obviously these new talents are a nightmare for that.

They needed to add a new talent at 120 though, either way.

Oh no!!! Cookie cutter builds were replaced with cookie cutter builds!

The original talent trees were pretty terrible back in Classic. I liked when they did the initial revamp, but the current choices are hit or miss depending on the class/spec involved.

Also, not having anything for both talents and new abilities after 100 is frankly boring in terms of leveling characters. We go 20 more levels without anything, primarily due to the breaking of the Artifact system from Legion that removed a LOT of extra perks and traits from the weapons.

They really need to do something about that. I would love to see something more intuitive than just the Diablo-style menu. Also, can we just get back some of the movement abilities as default? It’s incredibly annoying how much got cropped due to PvP reasoning over the years.
