Taking things as they are

So for the good majority during this expansion, I haven’t really seen many positive things said from a lore standpoint. There’s always something that seems to be wrong with the story, be it with a small crowd, split between the community, or the vast majority.

I feel like we just don’t let things be what they are anymore. We need to remember that the story of this game is not going to change our lives in any major way shape or form. Yes yes, I know some of us have spent a good portion of our lives playing warcraft-related games so of course we’d be invested in it. But at the end of the day, it’s just a game.

If it isn’t obvious enough Blizz seems to be in a situation where they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. In my opinion, Blizzard can’t really create an “original story” anymore because when they do we always seem to draw comparisons between it and another game/movie/book genre.

Now, I ask you all that complain and seem entitled that the lore should be written in a way that would satisfy you, would you be able to create a story that the vast majority in this game would love?

Well, I’ll put it to you this way.

If I pay a plumber to fix my sink, I am entitled to a certain level of service.
If I pay a stock picker to guide my investments, I am entitled to a certain level of service.
If I pay a car mechanic to fix my car, I am entitled to a certain level of service.
If I pay a lawyer to argue my case, I am entitled to a certain level of service.
If I pay a musician to play a song, I am entitled to a certain level of service.

If I do not receive that level of service, then I as a consumer may complain. In some cases, I can even demand a refund, cut off business or do less business with those people, organize boycotts, etc.

I think there is a critical mass of consumers of this story who feel that they are not receiving the expected level of service - and before you reply that writing is some different, expressive profession - it is not. WoW’s writers do not own the story, the shareholders do, and if the customers are upset, the shareholders soon will be as well.

The issue is that we all saw this coming. All pleaded for the writers to take things in a different direction and they straight up ignored us.
Like they don’t need to specifically cater to the community’s every whim, but at a certain point it feels like they are going out of their way to spite us. Because none of this feels natural.

Given the contradictions of the current lore with what was there, the narrative team does not allow it to be what it was either. Just saying.

For some people it did. For some people something in this game could’ve been a thing that helped to get through tough times or whatever troubles.

It’s easy to ignore the complains with the premise of “but somebody always complain”.

There are different people. For some there are many irl troubles. Stress at work / school / whatever, maybe even tense / abusive situation at home, made especially troublesome during the pandemic story.

It’s not random people who just complains for giggles who should be the topic of concern. It’s those people who might one day come home and see that the final straw that kept them going in a hope of better future, was thrown away / twisted for not much of a reason.

Now, it’s not possible to predict such effect, or be accountable for anything of this kind, and it’s not what I’m about. But keeping in mind that sometimes there is a lot more than just a few pixels on the screen that the devs are playing with, could be a good idea, to at least be sure, that the solid pay off in a timely manner would be served.

Not even remotely close. They are in the situation where they have to pick between ego and service. Them doing stuff they like, or doing things that their customers would want.

Plus, they never had to go in the direction about which they were warned not to. Yet they said “wait and see”. So, they get the reaction they were warned about, and the one they were creating themselves. Would be odd if they have any other emotions than happiness about the feedback they get. Since they explicitly chose precisely this path to follow.

It’s way easier than you make it sound.

1st - in comparison to what we have - maybe. I see people making far more interesting speculations than the full team of professionals are doing. Not in a condition to try to though. But never say never.

2nd - I would not even try to please everyone but would just be explicit in the contract with the audience and what are the general goals and principles behind the product I’d try to sell. And no deceiving marketing.

You are entitled to nothing. Your subscription does not entitle you to anything beyond access to the servers when they are up. That is it.

Just the same, Blizzard’s not entitled to my money when there are vastly better games out there with plotlines that aren’t worse written than some of the absolute dreck I read as a comics fan in the 90s. Sub ends in five days, better luck in 10.0 friends.
