Taking a Break: Back to BfA

Before someone yells at me, let me be clear that this is a “somewhere in between” post. Not a Classic exclusive post. Idk.

Decided that I’d take a break from Classic today. Been playing it every night since release after work and I’ve been having fun with my friends.

However… the things I’ve criticized about Classic are starting to settle in.

Long slogs of questing and killing mobs for experience, and I’m only level 23.

Elitist folks who think this is a job.

People screaming about how BfA is dead and that Retail is in for disaster.

Doing Stockades for literal hours on end because mobs keep spawning.

Friends who are no-lifing it so I feel like I have to keep up just to be relevant.

Farming quest items for hours at a time.

More complaining about BfA.

Elitists who think Classic Roleplay will be more successful than Retail roleplay.

Constant “this is 2006” jokes.

Hunter of the group; “That’s a hunter weapon!” No it’s not.

“Casual.”

Waiting and walking. So much waiting and walking.

I’m sure I could go on, but it’s just time I take a break. All these things are also what may make Classic enjoyable and I’m still interested in progressing my character, but I can’t keep staying up till 4 a.m. without making any valuable progress.

I got to level 23 yesterday on my main Classic character and I’m starting to almost regret how much time I’ve spent playing only to reach level 23.

I just want to level without feeling so strained, so forced, so demanded, and so SLOW. Guess I’m a shill or something, but I think it’s time to get back into Retail.

Just wanted to post some thoughts. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Classic was fun back in 2005 for me.

The game has changed for the better tho. Best outcome is that classic is an experiment for Blizzard to see what made WoW special back in the day, and implement feedback in to future xpacs.

If I play Classic im going to get to level 19 and just twink. I don’t like the leveling at all

Retail is a fun game to pick up and play. Classic is more like a world to explore, with all the tediousness that comes with that

Classic is clearly a successful game for many. Blizzard could definitely learn from it and add something special back into Retail because of it. There’s no doubt Retail has struggled - Classic may be the answer for that…

Just without wiping the whole slate clean with vanilla.

I think Nephinae worded it very well. Classic feels a lot more like an open world without a goal or a set plan even though there are NPCs that five quests.

Retail there is atleast a pull to want to complete each map because the quests tie into each other.

If anything I say we should ignore the haters and love both games for what they do well.

You’re level 23. If you think 23 is a slog you should be sticking to retail.

In Classic the adventure to 60 IS a big part of the entire experience. I say that as someone who isn’t playing Classic but hopes some of those Classic principles seep into retail.

Nobody should yell at anyone for playing the game they want.

As a player of both games with the philosophy that when it comes down to it, wow is just my favorite game in any iteration, I’ve been visiting GD and classic GD for a while, along with now playing and enjoying both versions.

When it comes down to it, complaints can go both ways, and the people that play the game today are different than people that played the game when I started all those years ago. What I mean by this is that even people who played back then who are returning are returning with 13-15 more years worth of life under their belt.

I guess what I’m getting at is that all this time that i’ve been paying attention to both classic and modern player’s complaints and stigmas, it all comes down to this. Both games deserve respect and criticism, and both games have great people playing that as well as crappy people playing them. That being said, don’t play classic or BFA for anyone but yourself. If you’re not having fun doing it then just don’t.

Lets turn these points around really quick to break down what I’m getting at, and maybe players can get some insight into the other side’s mentality… not likely cuz GD, but still. This is not a post to defend either game. Just to put it out there that any of these can be swapped freely.

Long slogs of questing and killing mobs for experience, and I’m only level 23. Rep grinds and time gated content

Elitist folks who think this is a job. io score snobs

People screaming about how BfA is dead and that Retail is in for disaster. Swap BFA for classic in that sentence.

Doing Stockades for literal hours on end because mobs keep spawning. Doing old raids for years on end for mounts, pets, and mogs

Friends who are no-lifing it so I feel like I have to keep up just to be relevant. this applies to both games

Farming quest items for hours at a time. Farming Rares for hours at a time

More complaining about BfA. More complaining about classic

Elitists who think Classic Roleplay will be more successful than Retail roleplay. RPers live in their own little world most of the time anyway, I don’t know many who think one way or the other on it, they just like to RP

Constant “this is 2006” jokes. Constant “this is 2019” and it’s not a joke

Hunter of the group; “That’s a hunter weapon!” No it’s not. Personal loot fixed that lul…

“Casual.” "…Casual."

Waiting and walking. So much waiting and walking. Too much instant travel (on a personal note here, just wish we could find a happy medium. Not walking for 45 minutes between towns, but also not having 4 18 second flight paths across the same city.)

Your counterpoints are things I don’t disagree with.

It’s just similar ways of criticizing both games.

Just enjoy both.

I am almost 31 and this one actually annoys me most.

I would love to just take my time but if I don’t keep within range I have to find others to do group content with.

It doesn’t work that way in Classic

Yep. All my friends are playing more than me.

I have a job. They don’t. Not that I’m rude to them about that, but it makes my point.

Why do people keep saying this? There is nothing magical about leveling in classic. It is an artificially slowed down slog of back tracking, slow quest mob spawns, ridiculously rare item drops, and longer travel time. There is still the saying that “The game starts at 60”.

Edit: Here is an example of the “adventure” that is classic leveling.

  • Got to the cross roads and pick up quests, one sends me to the far North West to Kill Harpies.

  • After killing the Harpies I needed (and a bunch I didn’t) I head back to get a new quest to go back to where I was and kill the other harpies I had just been killing for their rings…

  • Go back and kill about 20 of them to get the 6 rings I need and head back again only to receive another quest to return to the exact same area and kill the harpy boss.

  • Kill the harpy boss and return to get a new quest sending me to Stone Talon which is right past the area I was killing all the harpies in.

This is a huge reason why leveling in Classic takes so long. Or maybe how a group of us were doing a quest. We all got the drop, but the turn in started an escort that apparently we could only do one at a time. Each time took about 5 minutes.

Starting over with nothing has been pretty fun, but yeah classic is just so slow and painful. Every quest feels like the devs are (were) trolling me. Level 21 now, but i might be done after this 4 day weekend. Who has time for this and what is the point lol.

Because you were supposed to be in the world socializing with other players. The emphasis was on community back then. Grouping was the benefit. Playing alone sucked.

Playing alone sucks in retail, too. Unfortunately retail encourages soloing. That’s the problem with retail.

That is just flat out incorrect. I group just as much in BfA as I have so far in Classic. Also a bunch of these quests penalize you for grouping, so I am not sure where that is coming from. Also I have seen the “socializing” going on in classic. Sum it up in 4 words “anal”, “Trump”, and “Keanu Reeves”.

You group just as much in BFA sure, in instanced content.

Nothing is more boring than grinding out the same PvE experience devoid of player to player dynamics.

Not sure “encourage” is the right way to put it.

Soloing is possible and simple, not necessarily encouraged. Everything is objectively quicker and easier with someone else.

Classic’s philosophy of grouping up is a positive thing. It’s just that it adds to the already time consuming process.

Leveling to 60 isn’t exactly glorious and leveling to 120 is fast because could you imagine Vanilla esque pace with 120 levels?

Things need to be looked at for sure, but 60 slow levels is a drag. Not always the most meaningful adventure. It feels like I’ll be level 23 for the rest of my Classic career.
