EDIT I: Never in my life have I seen such a simple question spark so much toxicity. This question is just food for thought, and does not carry any motives to cause hatred between retail or classic.
I am not sure. But I bet you could get a more accurate answer on the Classic Forums.
Something that always strikes my curiosity is how people can’t find the correct forum to post in.
I love this community and its backlash.

Sure it might be more popular than retail for awhile. Classic isn’t going to always have something to do though and it’s eventually going to end. Classic will be a nice game to waste time on in between expansion/patch downtime.

I am just saying that the way to get the best guess would to go ask the people that are committed to playing Classic in the subforum set up for Classic conversation?

Well, I tried.
It fits a general thread.
Instead I retaliating responses.
At launch I could see it reaching a million or so.
I honestly don’t see it getting more than that, given what we know about private server populations and rough estimates of current WoW populations.
I also think half of that amount will be gone within the first month.
Unfortunately if you mention classic once people will react this way.
I gonna guess 1-3 million players.
Even if anyone tried to actually guess, you’re never going to know because they’re not going to say.
At least two dozen, but not more than seventy-six billion.
Darling, we don’t even know how many people play now how can we guess? I am sure tons will try it for a bit and cry on the forums just like any game. I do think a lot people will be in for a shock when the rose colored glasses get torn off.
