Tab Targetting

Dear Blizzard, this game is like 19 years old. That’s a long time to still be waiting for a fix to tab targeting lol. Just curious how many more years you think it’s going to take before we get a fix and it starts working as intended.

i’m curious about this. I tab target all the time. it does what I expect it to do. and i guess after so many years of using it, a player would understand how it works.

but what is it that feels incorrect to you and how do you want it to work instead?

It definitely does weird things sometimes. Choosing to target something far away rather than something right in front of you.

The older I get the more I think the tab targeting system is actually pretty great.

Sure some aspects of it felt clunky. But ultimately I was able to grasp it, land abilities on the right targets, all while moving my character. And I could do it even as a kid.

Maybe you should try action targeting, subby.

It’s only a bit funky for me when there are a LOT of targets as it needs to cycle them all. Use shift to go backwards.

I like when it tabs to yellow minding-their-own-business mobs instead of the very red very angry rare rushin my face…

Does it? When I am in bear form and tab target, I expect it to target the mob punching me in the face, not a random mob in a group 20 yards away. I always get the later.

Indie game developers maan …what you expect ?

Why does it prioritize the neutral mob 50 yards away instead of the crazy primalist hitting me with a stick? This was supposedly fixed back in…Legion? BfA?

Funny thing is, it actually worked better pre-WoD than it does now.

I use the combat target system, how does that work for you ?

First, tab targeting currently rotates through targets as you press multiple times. It is not supposed to do that. It is supposed to always target the nearest enemy. As others have mentioned, it also has a tendency to target neutral mobs and targets that aren’t even engaged in your current fight.

Tab targeting is supposed to only target the closest enemy to your character. That’s it.

I ALWAYS use tab targeting and it seems to work fine, IMO. What is it you don’t like?

hasn’t worked that way in years, it progresses thru targets not considering distance.

the new combat system does that.

I am not sure i understand the context in which this would happen.

but i feel like it can almost entirely be handled by positioning.

if this is in an instance, point your big bear butt at the mobs you don’t want and face the rest of your party who are trailing behind you. if it is an LOS pull, once all the mobs are in the corner where you want them, swing around so that they have their backs to the wall and your face is to the wall. that way the only thing in front of you are the mobs you want to be targeting.

and if i am trying to pick out one specific mob from a big group, i am just going to use my cursor to ensure I get that mob.

maybe i don’t understand the circumstances in which this happens to you

I tab target. Guilty as charged

When you say combat system, do you mean the auto-targeting? The problem I have with that is that if there’s a priority mob just a few yards away that you need to cc/interrupt and another mob that’s slightly closer, the auto-target will keep trying to lock onto the closer mob.

It also does this for mobs that aren’t centered on your character.

It has NEVER worked that way, but it is supposed to. Hence the 19-year question lol.

According to who? Because I am pretty sure Blizzard doesn’t say it should work the way you think it should.

This isn’t always possible in melee… Plus you’re assuming all the mobs behind the party are actually dead. So I guess it works for ranged. It has never worked for melee in my experience.
