Tab Targeting

I am once again asking, calmly, that a thousandth look be taken at Tab Targeting. There should be no reason why I target a mob out of combat instead of the one of the three in front of me.

Thank you. Have a Meri day.

It’s to keep things interesting.

RNG on drops wasn’t enough, RNG on procs wasn’t enough, you needed targeting RNG to really enjoy yourself.

You think you want good targeting, but you don’t. How else will you hunter pull?

It’s very annoying indeed. This Xpac seems to be filled with inexplicable bugs without fixing… Like the screen freezing and resetting all the time.

Is this why the hunter in one of my TW dungeons pulled the entire room and suicided? He was like oops idk how that happened

I had the opposite happen today; tab targeting kept selecting flying insects and not the mob behind them.

100% agree with OP, but seeing as i have a question that’s related, i thought i’d throw it in here. Have any of you experienced any issues targeting mobs by actually clicking on them? I do the vast majority of my targeting just cycling through nearest enemy just like tabbing around but i use a different keybind, but sometimes i want to actually click on a mob for some reason and mobs feel harder to click on this expansion.

I think it has to do with their hitbox, we went from last expansion having Brann with a 10 mile wide hitbox and it’s hard to target anything that’s remotely close to him, but now we have enemies where if you happen to click on the space between the mob itself and the actual unit frame above it, you can actually click straight through that gap and not target the thing you were trying to click on if you know what i mean? Maybe I’m just going a bit crazy lol

With like, three or four mobs? Nah.

But any more than that and the frames go wonky. It feels like a FPS.

Maybe it’s just a me issue :woman_shrugging:

have you played with the settings? you can set it to hit where you’re looking, similar to ESO type targeting. though that comes with its own issues in some circumstances

I am here too! This is soooo annoying. It needs to be addressed.

It’s really bad in PvP too. Tab always hits the furthest away enemy minion or pet, never the 4 enemies nearest me. It’s really bad today - it seems to have worsened over time - but the problematic tab targeting started sometime around Legion iirc. They changed something about it and it’s never been good since.

As a fellow PvPer I completely agree. A setting to ignore pets/minions to be able to be tabbed to could be such a simple code to implement, why it hasn’t been done yet it beyond me.

For PvP here’s a few suggestions people have told me, in case they help yo, but for me they don’t really help that much..

  • Under Options > Gameplay > Nameplates, you can try turning off ā€œMinionsā€ and ā€œMinor.ā€ Though I haven’t noticed this actually prevents targeting of them because I still do. lol
  • You can try changing your targeting keybind (Tab) to ā€œTarget Nearest Enemy Playerā€ instead of the default ā€œTarget Nearest Enemy.ā€ This doesn’t really work well for me because sometimes I want to target NPCs in epic BGs and it’s annoying to have to click on them. It’s also annoying to have to change the keybind again when the BG ends. I could see this option working well in regular BGs or rated though.

It does feel like tab targeting goes out of the way to target everything except an enemy casting a spell. Combine that with overlapping nameplates and it’s a recipe for a not fun time.

You can already do that, set tab to target nearest enemy "PLAYERā€ It does only target players but rarely is it nearest.

Possibly a glitch on my end, but even with that setting enabled it doesn’t always work for me. If I’m getting attacked by a BM Hunter or Demo Lock I’m pretty much in the habit of needing to click on them because 80% of the time I’m having to cycle through the zoo they’re controlling before it tabs to the actual player.

Clicking and mouseover have both been weird for me this expac. It’s like some hitboxes have grown to the size of skyscrapers. In dungeons, I’m almost always ā€˜moused over’ myself or an ally even if my cursor is off in Timbuktu, and there are certain decor items that once I set down I can’t click on anything else in the house because the whole house is now Lamp Hitbox, apparently? It’s getting old.

This is where you change your targeting keybind to ā€œtarget nearest enemy playerā€ (it’s in the basic settings), that was you immediately filter out minions, pets, mirrors etc etc. I always used this when i was pvping for the same reasons you encountered lol

Of course you have to change it back over when doing PvE

Edit: Ignore me, it seems someone else already mentioned this and it was discussed lol

Agree. Something happened between Pandaria and WoD. There was a change made to tab targeting that messed it up and it just has not recovered since. I am not sure what was changed in the code that decides which mob to highlight, but it’s sadly been busted for a long, long time. Tried playing around with the different modes we have now, nothing helped.

On that note, it would be FANTASTIC if tab targeting could focus casting mobs. It is insanely hard to switch between mobs in huge pulls and kick all casts. I am so tired of being screamed at for not interrupting. I am trying, man. But there’s like 20 mobs in this pile and I could not manage to target it in time /cry

I did also notice issues with mouseover, particularly while trying to ping. I somehow managed to ping someone in the back of the raid last night while clicking on the top right of my screen to indicate where to hide from the laser. How? Nobody knows. Maybe the player is a titan in disguise.

I’ve done two things,

My tab target is now set to target the closest enemy, this helps.

I also swing overhead for small groups.

However, neither of these are fixes. I acknowledge that.

Workarounds till then.
