System Edits?

I keep quoting posts, and the system keeps automatically removing the quotes, forcing me to edit the post to re-add it. I get the following message:

system just now — Automatically removed quote of whole previous post.

I quote the entire previous post all the time, and this seems really weird that it’s suddenly excising it now, even though it allows me to put it back in anyway. I know I can just select part of the post and click the quote button, but I usually just click on the “reply” button on the individual post in the thread and then click the “quote” button to put the whole thing in unless I’m just responding to part of it.

Anyone else having this issue? Have I just forgotten how to forums?

I had that issue as well. It really threw me for a loop

Well thank god! It is incredibly poor forum etiquette to quote the entire body of a post, especially now that it shows who exactly you are responding to and people can expand it if they want to see the context.

Please do us all a favor and quote only a sentence or two that can serve as an anchor point for your own reply.

Okay, you’ve a fair point there, but I should qualify that most forum posts are only a couple of paragraphs at most (take yours for example; I’m quoting the whole thing here because it pertains to my reply). If the post is really long, I often just snip-quote the bits that are involved with my reply, but I haven’t always on the longer posts.

Since you did politely request it, and it does make sense from a forum etiquette standpoint, I’ll gladly start doing that in future. The weird thing to me is that the system automatically does this, even for shorter posts. If the post is only a sentence long and I quote the whole thing and it automatically removes it, what am I supposed to have done?

There’s no need to quote the whole post, though. If you click the icon on the upper right of your post when you reply to someone, it’ll do that for you.

Best to use it to reply to certain snippets.

What is really weird is that I tried it just to see what it does, and it didn’t do it to me.

You mean the upper-left? That’s what I’ve been doing. I click “reply,” then I click the little speech bubble icon to the left of the bold text button. It automatically does the whole post unless I have something selected.

But now it’s sometimes automatically editing it out of my posts when I do that.

Yeah, hasn’t done it to me in this thread, but I literally copy-pasted that error message from the auto-generated notification that it sent when it did it to me in another thread. And it’s happened probably 4-5 times today.

No, if you reply to someone’s post that isn’t right above yours, you get a tiny little window of their icon, which you can click for what I described.

I’m not seeing that.
