I’m not a fan of Sylvanas but she is the last Vanilla leader and even though I dont like her if she dies its like a species going extinct. If only Cairne was still alive
tyrande would like to have several words
Technically speaking, Magni and Bolvar as well.
Technically speaking, neither Sylvanas -or- Bolvar are alive.
I’m only talking from the Horde side
The end of an ‘era’ isn’t necessarily a bad thing. With the end of or departure of the older generation of leaders, new NPCs can rise to the fore and challenge for the position, and as this is in an MMO, we can get to see a lot more character development and personality than the old top-down RTS series could deliver.
This is a good thing, especially since the last ‘OG’ Leader we have is our franchise’s version of frickin’ Starscream and is already jumping Garrosh’s shark on a unicycle spewing Blight and War-Crimes in it’s wake.
Bring on a new team of Horde leaders who aren’t bound by the dreams and legacies of their predecessors and can be used to push the Horde story into a different direction than the cheap, shallow ‘villains of the week’ angle Blizzard has been beating the player-base with since Cataclysm.
It did occur to me that, with the possible exception of MoP, all of WoW’s expansions have been based around plot points from the RTS games. And even then, we did get the pandaren from an RTS-era joke.
I’d love for WoW to get to be its own thing, for a while.
If BlizzCon is any indication, you should be expecting the return of the OG Warchief soon.
Sylvanas is #1
Can I opt to pull my eyes out of my ears with a rusted fork instead?
Anyways, I don’t think looking to Blizz to write any compelling new characters to replace the Vanilla/WC3 characters is a safe bet. Most characters I’ve seen come from WoW itself haven’t been all that interesting, with Garrosh being the most notable exception, and look where he ended up. And since this is a digital medium that often ignores its own lore that’s over a day old, story happenings like war crimes don’t really mean anything to me compared to the meta aspects that losing these characters impact.
So yeah if I had to pick whether I prefer a character I’ve loved for 14 years to not be killed, replaced, or whatever, or have someone out of the “interesting” pool of Forsaken “characters” that totally exists and doesn’t have to twist non-Forsaken characters like Voss or create abominations of writing like Sira to expand itself, well I’m going with Sylvanas. Every day. Every time. No matter what.
This is the thing to me, too, and do I get to just hold on to the iteration of Sylvanas that I found interesting as opposed to where they’ve taken her now?
I think trashing characters so integral to the IP is a huge mistake. Especially given the point above… they don’t actually have replacements. Voss, Sira, Delaryn (sp?), Calia, BLECH who f***
cares??
Any replacements need a lot more work before they can take over for -Sylvanas-. Those are big boots to fill. Unfortunately, I don’t see that work taking place. The only other character who is developed enough and has seen enough limelight is Nathanos. He has… the potential, but he’s still visibly in full puppy-kicker mode. Unless he’s hiding something, I don’t really buy that he’d be a decent replacement for Sylvanas.
As far as leader of the Forsaken themselves go, anyway. We’ll probably get Saurfang, Cairne or Thrall as Warchief.
It’s sad… I used to like Sylvanas as a character. She wasn’t evil - but she had her own motives that didn’t necessarily revolve 100% around her people. Then BfA happened and Blizzard refuses to acknowledge her as a villain, or at least acknowledge that yes, she’s doing -horrible things-.
I honestly wouldn’t mind more new characters getting some development.
Sylvanas dies, Tyrande and Malfurion retire, Magni and Muradin and Falstad vanish, Anduin disappears. Genn and Baine remain behind to pick up the pieces of the factions and train new heroes.
A new cast would be a seriously sweet change of pace. I’m getting tired of following these characters who are rooted in the old Warcraft games - I want to see a new band rise and change the world while the old guard either retire or rest in peace. It’d also let the writers get a chance to write characters that actually fit instead of mangling established ones to serve the plot.
I wish I cared about anything the way Cailias cares about Sylvanas. Even my wife would side eye my devotion in comparison.
Gentarn and Cailias should honestly just challenge Ion to mak’gora and take over Blizzard.
Blizzards over-reliance on nostalgic rts era characters has been their literary downfall, and they should have introduced new characters long ago.
I woke up, checked the update-thingy on my mobile in hope of more shifts, instead I find this and laughed so loudly the dog came in and checked me.
Thanks, Zenrao, but honestly I think six months into my hypothetical leadership Blizzard would be accused of ‘blackwashing’ at the very least.
rubs chin This may be my lack of coffee talking, but I’d dearly love to see Blizz include humans of actual colour with a Allied Races in the next expansion, a sun-drenched empire of island archipelagos heavily based off a blend of mediterranean and mesopotamic cultures, a kingdom very unwilling to get involved in the Alliance’s mess but ultimately decides to join much like the Shal’dorei signed on with the Horde?
???
Complete sentence.
Blackwashing is, to my understanding, a derogatory way of saying people are changing roles from typical white people to ‘black’ people for the sake of inclusivity. I imagine that ‘blackwashing’, in that frame of mind, could be any character made into a minority for the same reason.
Unless he means he’s going to paint the blizzard studio’s black, in which case…
