I’ve been trying to get this pet for ages and last night I broke down and bought it from the AH.
Today it dropped from the DMF battle

That’s how it always happens. Look/try for it, nothing. Stop looking/trying, it magically appears 
Congrats! (I think? lol) Maybe you can sell the drop and recoup some of the gold spent haha
