With all the unpruning and abilities Iike shield slam in every spec, could there be a niche build possible for casual content? A sword and board dps? Just coming back for Shadowlands.

Psst, it was called gladiator stance. It was in WoD. Though it was fun at the time. It was a balancing nightmare. For what it’s worth. The prot talent tree offers more damaging talents and more defensive talents. Though it’s not dps you can certain hit harder with certain talents. But as far as sword and board dps, I wouldn’t hold your breath.

If all you want is to do casual stuff like WQs and Torghast with sword/shield, you could just play prot.

Okay, I’ll be kind and take you at your word that you’re just coming back and have missed the rather extensive and acrimonious threads we’ve had on this subject. Thus, the short version.
No, not really. For reasons of both spec identity and game balance, there’s no current support for a Warrior setup that uses a shield and does anything approaching a full DPS character’s damage. If you want to be tankier you have to play the tank spec and accept everything that goes with questing as Prot. Just because Shield Block is in your spellbook doesn’t mean it’s at all effective to use, just like how Fury will have Slam and zero reason to use it over Rampage.

Careful talking about a sword and board dps build people tend to get tilted at what people want to play in a video game.

I think this is more in the vein of asking about our abilities on using S&B in Fury/Arms, now that there are a few baseline abilities.

Let’s make another 18 threads about it. Maybe all the Blizz devs that read these class forums will take notice.
So I was playing around with the idea on ptr(no beta). While in arms its possible. Far Far from ideal but you could as a casual messing about play style. You lose out on MS and cleave as ways of inflicting deep wounds and in that can drop a huge amount in dps but can retain all the other spells. You can apply deep wounds with ravager/bladestorm and execute though. Again it would not be an optimal play style and out side of casual world content wouldn’t have a place really but for something for the fun of it that’s the best we get. For now hopefully in my opinion.

Absolutely, if you wanna have fun you can prob play fury with a shield and play it without too many headaches, although no way would it be viable in high end content, but hey if your goal is to have fun go for it.

Why wouldn’t anyone’s goal to have fun in a video game I never understand why people are like omg you only want to have fun omg that’s not right. Playing a video game isn’t a job it’s to get away from the outside world and actually enjoy your self. Video games are for fun has everyone lost that concept. If you have I feel bad for how you’re life is and I pray that it gets better. There’s like a band of 4 of you that hates fun for video games lol. But I do understand it was a terror to balance talk about that like it won’t come back because they couldn’t balance it without screwing the tank spec up. But complaining about people wanting to have fun in a video game just doesn’t sound right at all lol.

It’s fine that people play to have fun and do impractical things in the name of “fun” or “fantasy”.
The problem comes when these same clowns complain that they can’t find groups for higher content.
Like that guy that wanted fist animations for worgens. “BuT…MaH faNtASy”…you can already equip 2 fist weapons I’m pretty sure. You just can’t use most, if any, of your abilities. So sure, RP away punching things, but don’t be shocked when nobody invites you to anything because you do 16 dps…

If sword and board dps was in the prot spec they would need to fix queuing so prot could also queue as dps. Its actually a minor thing that annoys me. Imagine what Tanks would try to do if they could queue as dps in a tank spec. Maybe the freedom would create some creativity.

I love how the question on this post was, hey can i do this for fun casual stuff. It wasn’t if it could be used for a +15 mythic or hardcore progression raiding. Yet its always the way posts like this run.
The idea of running a true S&B DPS spec this expansion is dead. We are to late into beta to see a massive change like that pop up. Those of us that want it can wait and see if come next expansion Blizz does another round of massive class changes. Until then have fun in world content if you want and ignore the haters.
