Hello,
I’ve not read up much on shadowlands because I want as much as possible to be a surprise for me. However, I was wondering about switching specs and how easy that would be concerning gear.
In BFA because of azerite slots in gear it’s hard to switch specs because you have to pay gold to change them. After changing your slots a lot it ends up being too expensive, therefore that sends you on a search for alternate gear sets.
I was wondering if anyone knew if this would be easier in shadowlands? If I wanted to play a hybrid class am I going to have to start collecting 3 different sets from the get go? Or can I wear my dps set as a tank / healing set?

As far as gear goes , they have said gear is just going to be gear.
The problem is going to be covenants because some class abilities work better with some specs then others.
Not sure what specs you play on that toon but let’s say Prot and Fury .
You quest fury but to pvp or dungeon /raids Prot. You decide to go with a covenant and find out it works great and the class ability is best for your fury spec but then you go into a dungeon/raid and find out it sucks for prot but then you find another covenant works better for your prot spec so you switch to that for dung/raid . Problem is you get done with the dungeons and still have open world stuff to do on your fury spec and want to go to that covenant to finish up because the week isn’t over you have to wait at least a week or more to go back to that covenant and if you finish all the open world stuff after going back and decide to go do dungeons and raids guess what another week or more to go to prpt covenant.
Has there ever been a time when we didn’t need a whole separate set of gear for multiple specs?

Switching between specs in Shadowlands is going to focus around two things:
-
How much you care about being effective on your second spec.
-
How lucky you are in choosing a Covenant with a good ability, and a good second Soulbind, for your second spec.
Each Soulbind has 2 or 3 potency Conduits that you will be using. These Potency Conduits are, with the exception of one Covenant Conduit, specific to the spec you’re playing. A Fury Conduit won’t be useful for Prot. There’s several paths down a Soulbind, but there’s only 3 Potency Conduits total in any Soulbind. So you will probably need to use a second Soulbind for your second spec.
There are sometimes big differences in DPS, healing throughput, or tanking effectiveness between different Soulbinds. So you might have a single Soulbind that is “the best” for all of your specs, requiring you to choose between them. Or you might only have a small DPS difference between two of your Soulbinds, giving you two good options.
The Covenant abilities are pretty straightforward. Kyrian Spear is godlike for tanking M+, but for DPS specs Venthyr Condemn will probably be a stronger option. It’s going to work like that for a lot of specs.
You will also need to craft a Legendary to use for your second spec, but that’s looking like it won’t take a whole lot of time to do.

Reading this, it sounds like people are going to need a couple of community college courses to figure it out

You’re not wrong. There’s a lot of moving parts in SL.
