I made the switch to Fire because I got tired of being a liability to my guild. I enjoy the play style, but I am definitely a long way off getting the rotation right, and balancing everything around combustion. I haven’t changed my covenant and kept Venthyr because of how much I have sunk into it. 2 questions, 1 how big of a dps boost is it to switch? 2, how long to catch up where I was before?
Covenant ability/conduits isn’t that huge of a dps gain. For single target you’re more than okay sticking with Venthyr.
As to switching covenants here’s the skinny:
-
If you switch covenants to a new covenant you have to start from scratch in terms of anima, sanctum upgrades, and renown. The only thing that transfers are the various conduits and memories you’ve unlocked. However, catching up on renown at least is very easy and you can do so the week you switch. You catch up by doing quests and getting random renown drops in dungeons (the difficulty doesn’t matter, there is no quest for this).
-
If you decide to switch back to a covenant you were already part of, you first have to do two quests to prove your loyalty to the covenant split by a weekly reset. So do a couple covenant specific dungeons and a WQ before the weekly reset and then do the same right after. Once you turn in the second quest (in Oribos) you rejoin the covenant. Any renown and anima you had with the covenant stays with it so when you come back everything you left is still there. Catch up for any renown you’re lacking works the same way as joining a new covenant.
Overall, switching and switching back is super easy, especially if you’re running m0s or m+ every week anyway.
I’m probably wrong but icy veins says like 1 to 3% more damage with Night Fae i believe. Its the not end of the world, but its not optimal either.
I should add all of the above is from personal experience. I too made the switch to Night Fae and Fire, but then decided I hated both and switched back.
Great feedback all thanks. I am not good enough I think to notice a 3% up tick. I have a lot of work yet to get my timing right around the mechanics and combustion correct. I will stick it out with my emo, tea drinking lords for now. And just in case its not clear, a buff to frost would be perfectly splendid.
Ya I wouldnt wait for a frost buff. I mean, play what you like regardless of numbers, but if you want to do the most numbers you can then fire seems to be the way to go.
But it seems you aren’t totally screwed if you go Venthyr over night fae. Sure its nice to have that cooldown reduction, but its not going to totally break your characte if you dont.
Hello Vasp,
What didn’t you like in Fire / Night Fae as I have already two (2) frost legendary and am about to make the switch to Fire / Night Fae.
I switched to Night Fae from Venthyr last week. Wasn’t so much a numbers issue as a rotation issue. I get way more use out of Shifting Power and Soulshape in M+ than I did with Mirrors of Torment or Door of Shadows. I mostly play arcane, a little fire.
Given how difficult Blizzard makes certain things, it was surprisingly easy to catch back up.
Night Fae: just the aesthetic. I jam with non-glowy vampires way more than whatever House Hufflepuff thing is going on in Ardenweald. I’m sure the covenant abilities are better optimized for fire, but I’d rather play a covenant I enjoy.
Fire: I just don’t like the rotation. Too focused on the narrow combustion window. Completely falls apart if you mess up. Insta-pyros are a blast (no pun intended), but down time feels frustrating. Scorch makes me angry for some reason. I would suggest playing with the fire rotation first before switching. Make sure you like the spec as it’s very different from the proc cycles of frost.
Welcome to the good player club
I’d take Hufflepuffs over Twilight anyday…
Emphasis on non-glowy vampires
