Swap Soul Fire with Chaos Bolt; give CB a CD

Just like in the old days, Soul Fire should baseline. But Blizzard swapped them.

  • Old Soul Fire: Cost soul shards
  • Old Chaos Bolt: CD that pierced and hit hard

Let it cost 2 shards to cast, do same damage and cast time as Chaos Bolt affected by Backdraft. (It used to cost a soul shard back in the day).

Give Chaos Bolt HUGE DAMAGE on a CD and short cast time like from Wrath and let it pierce absorbs like it used to. Or let it refresh immolate or refund a shard if used to kill a target. Or generate a shard. Something.

Make it a real signature spell, not a filler.

Chaos Bolt already feels like a signature spell rather than a filler. Others on this forum want CB to be reduced to 1 soul shard in cost, which would definitely turn CB into a spammable filler.

There are 2 big issues right now when looking at SF and CB:

  • CB doesn’t hit hard enough for the cast time (I do miss the pierce effect tho).
  • Soul Fire isn’t affected by Backdraft.

If Soul Fire gains interaction with Backdraft, that’s all it will take for SF to become practically mandatory. Especially with Havoc and Roaring Blaze, it’ll be too strong to pass up. Chaos Bolt either needs .5 shaved off the cast time (I’d prefer this) or another targeted % dmg buff (works but doesn’t address mobility & pvp concerns).

Ahh soul fire in the good ol days, when it was demos execute.

Chaos bolt becoming like it used to pre-mop sounds like a great idea tbh. It was fun seeing unsuspecting players die through their shields.

Not like we have any choice now. It would create a meaningful choice between extra backdraft procs or a good Soul Fire.

So as I said, make SF baseline again (from old days) and let it cost shards (like old days).

And put CB back on a CD as a hard hitting spell.

Because, IMO, Chaos Bolt right now is functioning as how Soul Fire is supposed to.

I’ve been thinking about this alot lately it seems and I think this is why destro has felt off for me in shadowlands. When I play destro I feel like I am a master of the demonic fires of hell and I rain down these fires on the enemy. Now most of that is true for current destro except for chaos bolt. If you watch the animation your character reaches down with each hand and is shaking as they struggle to lift these immense demonic powers only to hurl a massive green and black bolt of chaos at your enemy that looks truly terrifying. However it seems to hit more like a pool noodle than anything. Where as soul fire is a slightly larger incinerate that feels like a drawn out cast for damage thats only respectable if it crits. Also I dont feel like wasting another 4 seconds on casting it again if I’m in the heat of combat. So from a…idk…“lore” or “thematic” point of view both spells purpose and looks seem swapped to me. I don’t really care what you call it or how you balance it, I want to spam the “big fire ball”, fill with the “little fireball”, and launch the big, fat, juicy, bull rhino sized, black mamba, enemies-see-it-and-say-“OH F*#@ I DONT WANNA DIE YET!” bolt when the time is just right. But that’s just my opinion

Idk how to edit my last post but side note: yeah the WOTLK bolt was great, felt good to cast and was scary to get hit by

Yes it does seem like Blizzard switched Chaos Bolt with Soul Fire

I want it switched back.
