I’m strongly considering being a hunter main next xpac because it’s got two options for ranged and a melee option (and not heals/tank) which is a pretty good line-up imo.
I’m hoping to find a race that is a little less stiff than the Nelfs, and a little less “over engaged” than the Worgen. Any opinions are welcome. In a perfect world I’d find something that gets you pretty close to Oberyn Martell, but I won’t hold my breath.
Serpent sting and kill command animations are lacking, mongoose bite has 5 dirrenet animations for each cast and raptor strike has ~2-3
I think Mongoose Bite is one of the best melee animations in the game. It has variance to it.
I enjoy throwing the bomb. But, I think some races would be more apt at that than others and wish it had a glyph or that the Chakrams talent would replace it. I can see a Pandaren throwing a bomb. I can’t see a Night Elf wanting to throw a bomb. Or Serpent Sting being a crossbow. What kind of self-respecting Gnome is going to use a crossbow!?
So! The due to the large amount of race options for Hunter, I think sometimes the animations don’t line up too well depending on how “stiff”, as you put it, you adhere to a race. But! Mongoose Bite is still one of my favorite Melee animations and does a lot of the heavy lifting.
I would suggest these races fit the most in my opinion:
- Dwarf. Dwarf Mountaineers already use crossbows and a bomb isn’t much of a stretch for the gunpowder loving race. Neither is being in melee with a big weapon 2h weapon.
- Pandaren. Pretty much same reason as the Dwarf. Most Shado-Pan pandas are seen with crossbows. Bombs are easily explainable for a race that loves fireworks so much.
- Worgen. Van Helsing-esque werewolf hunter. Practically writes itself! Gadgets to give themself an edge over the monsters and a crossbow is the weapon of choice for many monster hunters in stories. Great for launching a stake at a vampire!
- Mag’har Orcs. Iron Legion used lots of explosives. They tend to favor guns over crossbows, but I wouldn’t suggest it’s much a stretch for a Hunter to favor the crossbow.
Those are my top picks. Essentially, you don’t want a race that is either against gunpowder/explosives and one that isn’t too technologically-advance so that seeing a crossbow on them looks a little silly. I have a Gnome Survival Hunter and a Pandaren Survival Hunter at 120 and have various ones mid-leveled. Seeing the crossbow on my Gnome makes me wish I had like a ray gun or something.
Desperately want more glyphs. Even just copy+pasting the Rogue’s Pistol Shot into a glyph for Serpent Sting would make me pretty happy.
Glyphs that impact the physical appearance of abilities should be much more common than they are. Even if the visual change was only active for the person casting it, and maybe for people in their party (so as to avoid visual confusion in the PvP environment, basically).
This isn’t even a hunter-only thing. We should simply have more opportunity to personalize our characters on the basic appearance level.

Copy your hunter over to ptr several times and just use the race chane option as it comes available. Then you can compare easy. I like kultirans a lot but the class mount doesn’t scale to them and that holds me back.
