SuperData says WoW’s player count is already ‘back to normal levels’ post-Shadowlands

If I could go back in time I would do 100% exactly everything riot games did. That game is a money printer.

“World of Warcraft player numbers fell back to normal levels as the excitement around November’s Shadowlands expansion subsided. From November to January, revenue fell by 61% and user numbers declined by 41% (these figures do not include China)."

LOL. Yep I don’t doubt the validity of this data. Many of us have been saying it for weeks now. Our friends list activity has dwindled as have our guildmates.

Sad sad times. Waiting for that shill fanboy to come on here posting about how wrong the data is or how it’s normal to have this extreme drop-off after only 3 months and about how amazing Blizzconline was and how we should be grateful they even did one.

I rather them not have done it at all. The leak literally gave me all of the “content” I needed in a much more digestible format.

What do they define as “normal”?

Remember, terms can be redefined easily.

8 million may have been normal years ago, while they may consider “above 3 million” normal nowadays.

So, its rather misleading.

This might be the fastest decline they have ever had post expansion release.

Superdata is like one of the most reputable data collection platforms in the world lol.

The data isn’t wrong, but also isn’t horrible when put into context.

WoW went from the #3 Top Grossing PC game on the market to the #5 Top Grossing PC game on the market…and that’s not including what they are making from China.

So a decrease, yes but still in a really good spot.

Are these #s including Classic? That has had a pretty hard fall recently as well and could be partially why.

Kind of weird they only include WoW west while money on this list are global. DFO is absolutely massive in China.

They share the same sub, so yes.

This sounds like normal post content release news that effects every mmorpg out there.

3 months after release??? Huge doubt. Provide some historical proof to support that claim because I’m not buying it.

That is a fair question.

Lets assume MoP/WoD is a baseline which would put the numbers around 3 to 5 million players.

Pretty good given the delay of systemlands and all the problems with systemlands at launch.

But BlizZard has to deliver with the first patch in a big way.

FFXIV CEO lieterally states 3 months is when their content cycle drastically loses activity.

If only FF14 had ever made the list of Top Grossing PC Games…then we could verify

I don’t care about what the FFXIV CEO says, we are talking about WoW and a claim was made to normalize this steep drop off in WOW after only 3 months.

So state your facts with proof of that sharp drop off in prior expacs after only 3 months.

They can’t, no one can, sub numbers are a closely guarded secret at Blizz lol.

Right now the core WoW audience is engaging with WoW but if BlizZard fumbles the first patch that changes.

However, if BlizZard succeeds with the first patch then they can retain their core WoW audience and even make it grow as the expansion progresses.

A strong first patch is needed to avoid a repeat of Battle for Abilities!

I wasn’t doubting the company. Just more a comment about how “normal” can change and have different meanings to everyone. The fact that their numbers excluded China makes you wonder WHY they excluded China.

This drop off has been normalized in the MMORPG genre for a while.

Because it’s really hard to get solid numbers from China. The company that runs the game takes the bulk of the profits.
