Hello, with the recent banwave being lifted specifically for people with character mods, I wanted to make a suggestion that maybe it’s time the game could support modding too.
I’ve never used wow character mods myself but I am very enthusiastic about modding and have made mods for multiple games in the past from adding textures, replacing models, sound files etc.
and I am curious to see the things people can implement in game aside from anything NSFW (which I will get to that in a bit too)
Here’s how I think it could be implemented
-
“Mod Folder” it could function similar to addons I have seen how the wow client works Implementing mods in the game could be as simple as having to place a file in the folder for your characters.
-
“Mod Only Works for the User Using the Mod” TF2 once had a problem with the modding scene specifically because people exploited character mods in order to give them an unfair advantage in the game, and I can see that becoming a problem with wow if mods are implemented too. To avoid this Mods should only work for the users player character using the mod instead of everyone else.
-
“Mods can be monitored” If the players are using any mods that can be considered offensive, perhaps this could be something the wow client would scan similar to how blizzard saves copies of pages from your Roleplay Addons.
I understand the game has more important problems to deal with, but this was just a suggestion, I find Modding healthy for the games overall lifespan.
But those were my suggestions, what do you guys think?

I would like to use a mod that makes our characters and the world look way more better. As long as it doesn’t change any ingame mechanics or spawn extra ores or change the overall game-play style, I am all good for that.

That’s why I made the suggestion! Need a mod that brings back older character models? We could make a mod for that, better textures? We could make a mod for that, do you want your Multi colored elven eyes? Mod
I can’t see these affecting gameplay, especially if it should only affect your character

Didnt read your thing too tired at the moment. How ever i am fine with the kinda mods only you can see and dont give an unfair advantage.
Back in vanilla I always thought the night elf cat mod where you change the form from cat to worgen was awesome so if someone wanted to do it go for it.
Ive never used any and barely use add-ons but if they allowed it thats what you wanna do go for it. The only limitations i would add is character model only or risk of banning. For the simple fact if you allow mount mods you can screw over the game store and cost them money and at this point we dont want blizzard mad at us.
So that way people can have their huge busts, nude models, and custom armor with no infringement on other peoples games and fun

I never thought about that, maybe mods should only be for the character models, its spells etc. not their Mounts or anything you could obtain with money.

Changing a Gryphon into the Pig would mean ALL instances of that Gryphon would be the Pig on your end and your end only. Tis the nature of Client-Side: Only YOU can see it.
I doubt money would be lost, as it seems the majority of WoW players do not touch Texture/Model files.

That is true, it’s the prestige that the mod could be shown off to everyone else that is the difference, however we still don’t want to take any risks as blizz might see this as adding things you could have purchased as free mods instead.
I have a better idea. I’ve never used any sort of character mod myself. But I’ve seen some examples of the ones that these addons use.
They just make so much sense. How about Blizzard actually implementing a program to update some of the armor visuals?

oh, care to show me some of these Addons? I wasn’t aware much addons outside of UI changes existed.
Would be nice if we could do things like hair color edits, eye color edits, etc.
Nothing like changing an Orc into Ragnaros or such. Just basic modifications.

I can see Texture Edits being the easiest to implement, and the least to affect the game too much. Such as Orcs being turned to Ragnaros etc.
If I recall correctly Void/Blood to High Elf mods already exist, and all they do is switch up the textures from what I can tell.

Somebody did post one Void Elf → High Elf.
I had to crop it, though: https://i.imgur.com/dc1IEsK.png

That would fall under violation of the TOS, which could get people banned and a lot of folk pointing and shaming them.
Even if the textures are 150% officially made.

They should take that ‘fixed’ version of the bikini armour top as it is their intellectual property, and put it in the game.
I support this too.
Yap. According to reddit posters, this is one of the most popular Void Elf to High Elf mods (not going to specify the name, as that would go against the forum ToS), which made many players receive a ban:
I have to say, these models look great.

I know, I’m pretty sure i’m posting in the World of Warcraft forums not the Skyrim one

you’d sure confuse me. you should not be allowed to alter models in an MMORPG for any reason. play a single player game if you want to do that

Well then, what is the reason?
and I make mods for multiplayer games too

In a game like Skyrim, this makes sense because it’s single player. In an MMO however, what’s on your screen needs to be visible to others. You can walk outside and imagine people in their underwear, but your vision will never allow it to be true.
