Hey all,
I’d like to propose a simple but powerful customization option: allowing players to change the color of their spell effects using a streamlined glyph system.
The Core Idea
Instead of creating a separate glyph for every spell and color combination, Blizzard could implement universal color glyphs that shift the visual hue of a player’s abilities across the board.
For example:
- Glyph of Crimson Magic – Changes all eligible spell effects to red.
- Glyph of Azure Magic – Changes them to blue.
- Glyph of Verdant Magic – Green.
- Glyph of Twilight Magic – Purple.
- (And so on—maybe 5 to 10 color options total.)
These glyphs would apply a hue shift to a predefined set of eligible spell visuals (likely iconic or high-visibility ones), giving players a way to customize their spell aesthetics without needing a unique glyph for every single ability.
Implementation Details
- Backend Logic: Each spell effect could have pre-saved hue variants (e.g.,
divine_storm_1
,divine_storm_2
, etc.). When a glyph is applied, it simply tells the game to load the corresponding hue ID. - Eligible Spells: Limited to major visual spells (Divine Storm, Shadowbolt, Chaos Bolt, etc.) to start. Could expand over time.
- No Gameplay Impact: 100% cosmetic. No change in animations, damage, or mechanics.
- Persistent Across Specs: Glyph affects all appropriate spells regardless of specialization or class form.
Why This Is a Win
- Minimal Asset Overhead: Just 10 hue variants per spell, not 100+ individual glyphs.
- Better Scribe Economy: Gives Inscription new relevance without overwhelming recipe lists.
- Player Expression: Enables players to match their spell visuals to their transmog, mount theme, or personal identity.
- Future-Proof: New classes and spells can be added to the system incrementally.
TL;DR:
Let us customize our spell visuals by color using just 10 universal “hue glyphs”. Easy to implement, highly expressive, and great for personalization without affecting gameplay.
What do you all think? Would love to see this gain traction.
