Play on free server if all you need is pvp and no effort. I do not see any point in this… Blizzard will still have to pay servers and stuff for what… for not getting paid?
I find it difficult to convince my friends who love PvP games to get into WoW.
The upfront costs, subscription fees, and the daunting grind to max lvl, and then to decent gear, just for the “real” PvP stops people from even giving it a chance.
Having a PvP server like this could get the harcore PvP players from games such as Fortnite and LoL to come try out WoW and give it a real chance.
Also, a server where all the classes have very similar item levels may help devs balance the PvP easier, perhaps.
Also, the new players who come to this server for the PvP would no doubt at some point want to see what the “real” WoW is all about, and may possibly become subscribers to the main servers.
“Since there is no PvE content to run, and no fees to play, open an in-game shop that sells cosmetic items, such as mounts, pets, toys, and transmogs.”
Beyond the “no slippery slope here, just a fast descent in to hell” of micro transactions, I don’t see this is a necessarily bad thing.
It would be an interesting expansion to the base game.
The only real issue with it, is simply that it’s lazy. More lazy the WoW Classic or 6 month sub mounts.
You’d think it would be pretty easy to just make a simple “lobby” with a BG queue table and use the stock battlegrounds, and a couple of vendors. Pound this out and launch it with 2 months of development.
But, then that’s what you get – a game with 2 months of development.
If they did something like this, it wouldn’t bother me. But, I’d still think it was lazy.
PVP is part of the whole game, there is ZERO chance that they would do that. Not only they would lose profit from paying people who would decide to have only “fun”, but also pay the servers for nothing.
If you want to play for free, there is lvl 20 trial.
Sorry, 15 dollars a month is nothing in compare of what you spend in real life. I often hear like “I would rather buy something real”, but for 15$? It is like two drinks lul. Also, I saw prepaid cards somewhere on G2a for like 10$.
Okay, check this out. Here are the top watched games on Twitch this month:
Fortnite, LoL, Dota 2, CS:GO, PUBG, Hearthstone, Overwatch, FIFA 19, Sea of Thieves, CoD, and then WoW. (source: twitchmetrics(dot)net/games/viewership )
All of these games are PvP games. Eight of them are PvP-only games.
Five of them are free, of which the top four games are a part of.
All of these other games have microtransactions.
Toss these around for a bit and think about what a server like this could possibly do for WoW.
edit: op here btw. accidently posted with diff toon
Everything the OP mentioned is the exact opposite of what an MMORPG is. I would never play a WoW like that because that isnt WoW.
If WoW wasted resources on something like that, those of us who like what WoW was originally would quit and you are correct, there would be no one paying for the game.
Edit - But I bet you could play it on your phone if you had one.
This is near identical to the thing Warhammer Online did right? (although just T1) where the game became f2p but only for wvw, honestly this would have worked but the problem is the WPvP scene of wow is just a bit too broad, there isn’t any area nor much objectives to take part in to incentivise players to do WPvP aside from the usual kill quest.
I doubt you would be able to support the cost of creating and maintaining this server with just cosmetics in the shop. Most F2P games make money because it is often a pita to play them without investing in time savings items.
