This game is going to be 20 years old come November.
In this patch alone - that, like most other patches, was on the PTR for testing - we have very broken aspects of the game on launch. Aspects that are primary features of said patch.
- The Harbinger quest breaks at the very beginning when Alleria doesn’t spawn the portal unless you leave and rezone.
- The new LFG UI is completely broken and the only known fix, currently, is to turn on the mature language filter option.
- The new AH UI feature for filtering to this expansion just doesn’t work.
These are just the few things multiple people have come across in the few hours that it’s been live.
Like… what do you do during internal building and testing? What do you do with the feedback from the PTR? How can something that is this developed get broken so easily?
The phrase that gets tossed around a lot is “spaghetti code”. If you’re in the industry, I’m sure you’ve heard it.
Wouldn’t it just be easier / better overall to rebuild the game from the ground up? You have the money and the resources. Stop throwing things on top of the pile and hoping it sticks because, with the numerous amount of bugs and issues we’re having every single patch, it seems that’s what is happening. It’s like a potter with their mold - sometimes it needs to be reclaimed and remade.

What would WoW 2 offer that WoW currently can’t do?

I’m not asking in the aspect of new / different content. I’m asking if it could be re-written from the programming / coding side of things. The same game just completely rebuilt with today’s standard in game development. This opposed to what appears to be throwing new stuff on a 20 year old foundation.

I understand the point you’re making and Smite is doing something similar for other yet also similar reasons. But I don’t think it’s an engine issue.
The backend of WoW’s engine, I have to imagine is upgraded and updated every expansion more and more as time goes on. And that will be even more true post TWW and repeated releases of “evergreen” content moving forward where systems they put in will actually push over to the next expansions and so forth.
Simple answer, and one a lot of people on this forum are gonna think is either me “defending” Blizzard which I have no reason to do or want either. But from recent postings as also observed on this very forum that QA testing positions are currently available at Blizzard.
Meaning their internal QA department, might be like in shambles right now. Is that giving Blizzard lenience where they don’t deserve any? Absolutely!
Cata Classic and this patch both should have not released when they were in this state. I think it’s turning into a downside of just how much content they’re putting out as of late. With Plunderstorm, SoD, Cata Classic, MoP Remix, Retail’s Latest patch. ON TOP of working and testing TWW and probably early development of Midnight.
Are these excuses? Yes, they could be seen as that. They’re a billion / million dollar company. That has been hammering out content for Warcraft specifically more so then ever lately. And I think it’s coming at a cost of their QA and testing.

Do you think that making a new game would mean none of these sorts of problems would happen? I think thats being a bit too optimistic.

Would you be ok with no new content at all for probably about 10 years that would be required to pull this project off?

Bare minimum requirements is to let us take our mounts, pets and transmogs with us.
Unless that happens, release of WoW2 would be a good timing to completely quit.
