I was able to join in on all the bosses and got them done, but even though I have those 5 items needed to get the loot, mold and forgemaster, all that happens when I get near an altar is that the little gear lights up, I click on it and then nothing except I get my butt kicked and die.
Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong with this chaotic quest?

Well, the special loot objects (like the crucible) require 5 of the appropriate crystal thingies whose name escapes me.
I think “opening” those also has a brief invisible cast time, and then a popup warning that you are about to loot the thingie and it will cost you five crystal thingies (like you have some other use for those things to save them for) and then you get to loot, after confirming that yes, you really meant to loot it and you’re ok with the cost.
Meanwhile, the mere fact you have interacted with the loot container has summoned the container’s guardian, who is kicking your butt while you struggle through the unnecessarily slow looting process.
Ummm… advice.
Expect the process of opening one of these containers will take longer than it should, be ready to click the “ok” option on the looting question, and don’t approach the container unless you’re full health and ready to fight to escape or defeat the guardian when he spawns.

Ja, I have the 5 “thingies” (I can’t remember their name either), but I didn’t realize this was a timed quest (of sorts).
Now that I have your answer, I will try it again and pay attention to the things you mentioned. Before, I was clicking on the gear that pops up and wondering why the hell nothing was happening and so missed the other things going on.
This doesn’t seem like a quest at which a solo player would do well.
