Hey, I’m assuming the answer is gear & secret tech, but I figured I’d ask.
I just started playing again on retail from leaving Crimson behind due to not enjyoying the way rogue was designed, and ofc i’m trying prepatch & tww.
I’ve got some honour gear on my rogue, but I’m not sure why my backstab does 12k damage / shadowstrike 50k damage on targets with nearly 2m health.
From what I know about rogues, the only thing really increasing the damage for my stabbing / building attacks is Mainstat & Versa.
Has health simply scaled too high for doing anything other than huge mastery ST’s?
I can get nearly 200k on a buffed Goremaw if I stack, but other than that I need bis gear or something.
What’s the go-to for subtlety pvp damage? I really dislike spamming finishers but I’ll do what I must.
As sub, you only ever want to be pressing your attack buttons if you’re bursting. Otherwise, you dont want to waste 45+ energy on backstab, its a energy drainer and not worth pressing almost ever. Your damage outside of shadow dance WITH symbols up is dogwater and that remains even now. In pvp with season 4, sub as been in the gutter because we have been needing all of our gear back but also the constant nerfs to Eviscerate we have been receving and with Season 4 with everyone’s hp so huge, sub has been in shambles.
With the buffs with this prepatch, it might help us but i havent got to try it out yet but i will this evening.

See above comment. HP has risen too high in season 4 for sub to do any meaningful damage when you can play outlaw/assassination with 10x the easier time to do similar damage. Duel wasnt even a threat for a while in this season. In fact facing other subs i dont think i have been dueled once because they couldnt bring me down enough to make it matter lol.
I dont think many are using goremaw, or at least i dont. But i play with Secret tech build
Secret tech WITH Danse i think is the go-to for damage. You can do without it but you need to really line up your talents for it to be meaninful burst damage. Hope this helps

I was hoping this wasnt the case. I hate secret tech lol.
I much prefer pooling energy and dumping some ambushes. But thats gone obviously.
At this rate they’re gonna make me nostalgic for MFD / legion. Ugh

Sub is just the agility version of Frost DK; if you’re gonna play it you need a reliable source of copium.
I tried sub and its damage is still absolute doodoo. My secret techs were hitting for about 130ks, which is closer to around 400k when it all hits. This was when i was buffed up even in a BG sitting at 140% mastery. Either the paladin had a defensive i didnt see, or sub is still not worth going to (not to me atm)

you wont do any damage REGARDLESS in PVP. Blizz has gutted the class/spec. so you will have to re roll
Danse Macabre is just new a new find weakness. We aren’t really going to scuff the heck out of people regardless of the build but you definitely need multiple offensive cds (they are all tuned very closely).

Im a big advocate for fat shadowstrikes and gloomblades /generators and it does comparable damage . Secret technique does do good damage , just not meme damage (nor should any ability) but everything is impactful mostly during blades only though as we still have a few nerfs over us ( it is whatever, not a big deal).

prepatch will be odd as always but tuning is in progress.

people’s hp is a bit high which isn’t favorable to us but is fair across the game (better than being nerfed into stun bot)

lots of classes gained a lot of stops and new defensives and healing so adapting is big.

Just find what you love and mix different talents to see what stands out to you man.

the finality focused kids just really focus on finishers and those like us just have to mix stuff a little more and think a little differently which is good and stat slightly differently.
They are avoiding memes in tuning for us so we are slowly being brought up without being oppressive as heck. Definitely feels fine, just not ridiculous where it is drawing unnecessary attention (good spot to be).

Paladins def have a lot of defense and hunters / warlocks etc along with a lot of hybrids healing more overall atm. Shaman definitely can take a punch atm too.
Ive been slapping paladins pretty hard but they also hurt so def have to be careful. I honestly wouldn’t sweat it.

Is there a way to refund the expansion? $100 for a crap game where my class is unplayable

Oh yeah im not saying the spec will be unplayable into the expansion. Just now in its current position, its not worth playing unless you have some teammates that can basically do everything lol. Assassin even has more CC than sub when it comes to casters now especially with subterfuge going to 6 seconds. Garrote/garrote/garrote an entire TEAM, rupture their TEAM, Shiv their TEAM, smoke bomb and everything else that sub pretty much has. Just has a better counter against casters but garrote also does fat a#$ damage, and you dont have to keep worrying about that restealth for a setup where you’ll barely do any damage currently.
I think Sub will be strong again when we’re capped on level 80 gear, but right now is probably not the time. What spec have you been playing with?

our cc kit has been nerfed to the point where this isn’t fun to me now, & doing no damage while the mage carried was my preferred playstyle lol. But maybe i’ll be able to enjoy it still. Here’s hoping.
As I mentioned in my initial post i’ve skipped DF due to not liking the direction they continued to take rogue in following SL, but I’ve always played subtlety & assassin on and off. Can’t pay me to play combat/outlaw. - So i’ve been on classic wrath & now cata reliving what I feel to be better subtlety rogue design for undiluted copium that things will get better.

I also have a rogue im leveling in classic, but havent decided on a spec on that one. leveling will take a while as its just an alt. outlaw with the dice thing has never enticed me really so i’ve never gone with trying the spec. its always between sub/assassin for me

Subtlety , always and forever man, i don’t switch for anything. Its the way ive been since I started in BC and its the way ill go out. Im a 1 character guy and Im only a rogue in any mmo / rpg. I dont care to do anything else.
We just received some tuning yesterday but it isn’t going into the live client. It definitely gets better at 80 when all the moving pieces are in place.
- no classe’s single ability is going to do 1/3 of someone’s life. Damage is fine and getting focused on numbers isn’t a good idea.
- Nightstalker removal to focus on core abilities and special attacks was a good move
I can still hit someone hard but yes, our hand is kind of forced to be a bit more patient which is how rogues have always been anyway instead of mongo mania. I don’t agree with how we are tuned down because some lesser minded fool complains nonstop and refuses to press defensives but I also don’t agree with burst donkey 40% of someones life with any ability. The devs are tuning everyone around a middle point with some exciting moments but not to where anything is the main hero of your kit hijacking it (wise decision and fair on tuning).

Sounds about right, after 50 nerfs through dragonflight sub does the least amount of damage of any DPS. Idiot devs listening to people playing noob specs (DH, Boomy,Warrior,Ret) destroyed the class.
Finishers do no damage because people die in our burst window( intended game play because you needed cross cc unless the people you were playing were bad) so gutted. Backstab/gloomblade were also nerfed because there was another build that used The Rotten and the other builder buffs to do good builder damage ith moderate finisher damage but better CDR than the Finisher build.
So yes, you doing less damage than a augmentation evoker is intended and also dog sh!t. Rogues have been getting crapped on for 4 years now and it needs to stop.

Same lol. I do more burst than sub as assassin right now. I’m sure things will even out a lot when we’re max, but that’s the current state.
