Subscription events: FFXIV vs WoW

I know a lot of people get rowdy over comparing the two games, but since they’re the only two I really play, I wanted to make a slight comparison between something specific, that I’d love to see WoW adopt.

Subscription events. You know, things that drive people to subscribe during content lulls.

Currently WoW does a 6-month promotion with a mount that eventually arrives on the store. But that’s the end of the promotion. Subscribe, get a mount, nothing added to the game during this time.

FFXIV runs in-game events to get a mount. They dropped a summer carnival a little while ago that led to a polar bear. This month they’re doing a FFXV crossover that awards the car from that game.

All of FFXIV’s events to entice subscription put something in the game to do (think brewfest, but frequently) and that’s how you get your mount. I really enjoy this, even if it’s a small addition, it breaks up the monotony a little and often utilizes the older world content, again, like Brewfest.

Now, I know Brewfest is coming up, like, tomorrow. But what if we had stuff like this pop up year-round, like the micro holidays they tried to do, and each micro-holiday had a mount, or a collectible, or some bit of story or something in-game to promote subscriptions, instead of these shop deals?

I mean, stuff like Brewfest hasn’t been updated in a long time. Update these holidays with your promos or something!

I’d just love to see more reasons to log in instead of more reasons to subscribe to a game for the sake of it.

I’d love to not hear about FFXIV on the WoW forums but we don’t always get what we want.

WoW has Sylvanas.

FFXIV has ???.

And I’d love to see something new for the holiday events. Say, the faction mounts redone in snowy white and decked out with holly and candycanes for Winter??

Something fun to collect.

Well then just pretend that I didn’t bring FFXIV into it, and this topic is just “why not put your subscription event mount in the game with something to do?”

I’m not saying one game is better than the other. I’m playing both. I just like how this one game handles their subscription events, specifically. And they have a model that I’d like to see WoW adapt.

Well written characters with believable motivations.

Blizzard definitely needs to update these world events, I am getting tired of paying for content that is over a decade old, a reskin or different hearthstone each year that shares the same cool down just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Y’shtola. Who literally threatens to take you over her knee for sassing her. Yeah, no, FFXIV wins.

Well I’m on my last few days of my wow sub, decided to give it a break. I just tried ffxiv for the third time taking advantage of the free trial.

I came to the conclusion that I don’t want to play either one of them.

I’m enjoying Diablo 3. I like not having to worry about a sub and justifying paying a sub fee. I’m picking up my old gw2 I will likely play that a bit to.

9/25 see ya

I mean sure, but to be honest, i would want it to be more or less all year around rather then just specific points for just subbing sakes.

I feel like a lot of people are just growing out of MMOs. I probably play FFXIV as much as I play WoW these days, which is, like, 30-40m a day tops.

But I do log in for FFXIV’s holidays and events for their collectibles. It’s kinda FOMO, but they always seem to come back around, usually with something new added.

IDK the last time I logged in for a WoW holiday or the last time there was an interesting WoW event. I’d love to see more reasons to log in pop up.

Yea I’m kinda there too, if I’m just playing a game for a few events then I can’t justify a monthly sub.

I will say this, things like the golden saucer, with races ect available every day is something that is superior to the wow version of the dmf.

The Moonfire Faire was released in 2016. That happens in August, and is not a new event. It runs after Midsummer Fire Festival, which is July.

You forgot the crossover with Hearthstone, with the more recent 6 month bonus.

FF14 Does do really small content patches regularly though, I will give it to them for that. Someone could see that in wow and likely accuse development of doing drip feed like GTA5 Online.

This is the same dude who cried about limited time rewards in WoW (MT)… But supports FFXiV limited time rewards.

Both games get rid of rewards and if you didn’t play at the time its too bad. FFXiV calls those items glamour, we call them transmog… It is the same thing.

Ladies and Gentleman you can not make this stuff up. We are living in the Twilight Zone.

Was the polar bear not new?

Yeah but this still does not add anything to do into the game. That’s my gripe. I think the game needs more holidays and that the ones that do exist need to be updated more frequently.

That’s far more attractive to me than tying a new mount model to the shop or a subscription to the game that suffers from enormous lulls in stagnant content.
