I know a lot of people get rowdy over comparing the two games, but since they’re the only two I really play, I wanted to make a slight comparison between something specific, that I’d love to see WoW adopt.
Subscription events. You know, things that drive people to subscribe during content lulls.
Currently WoW does a 6-month promotion with a mount that eventually arrives on the store. But that’s the end of the promotion. Subscribe, get a mount, nothing added to the game during this time.
FFXIV runs in-game events to get a mount. They dropped a summer carnival a little while ago that led to a polar bear. This month they’re doing a FFXV crossover that awards the car from that game.
All of FFXIV’s events to entice subscription put something in the game to do (think brewfest, but frequently) and that’s how you get your mount. I really enjoy this, even if it’s a small addition, it breaks up the monotony a little and often utilizes the older world content, again, like Brewfest.
Now, I know Brewfest is coming up, like, tomorrow. But what if we had stuff like this pop up year-round, like the micro holidays they tried to do, and each micro-holiday had a mount, or a collectible, or some bit of story or something in-game to promote subscriptions, instead of these shop deals?
I mean, stuff like Brewfest hasn’t been updated in a long time. Update these holidays with your promos or something!
I’d just love to see more reasons to log in instead of more reasons to subscribe to a game for the sake of it.
