Subject: In Game Navigation Not Working

The diamond shaped quest location and distance indicator in the game is not working at all for me, meaning it isn’t showing up at all, on any of my characters, or for any of my quests. The golden arrow on the compass map is also non-existent. I only noticed the issue Saturday night when I went to turn in and start the Gryphons of a feather quest chain on my level 70. I have not been in game for several days, so I could not tell you when these indicators vanished in relation to any updates.

First, I investigated the options area to make sure the "In game navigation " was active and it was checked. I unchecked it, logged out of the game, came back in and checked it again, but still no effect on my issue, still no diamond and still no golden arrow.

Second, I checked the map trackers, which were all checked that could influence this issue that I know of, and they are not much different from the default, accept I like to track Low Level Quests too.

Third, I dared to remove all of my beloved add-ons, assuming one or more may be bugged due to the release of new content.

Fourth, I deleted the infamous file folders, WTF, Interface and Cache folders.

Fifth, I have done a scan and repair on the game client.

None of this restored these things.

It isn’t just effecting one character either, it’s effecting characters in their level 50’s and characters at level 14. So it isn’t just the level 70 with the Gryphons quest on him that is getting this issue, it’s effecting my entire account.

Without this navigation tool, which I have deeply appreciated the whole time it’s been there, I am literally lost in unfamiliar content, and disoriented in the content I know, because at the very least the golden arrow on that compass map has been my guide since I started playing.

I don’t know what more I can do.

I have a Dxdiag report and a msinfo report but no way to attatch them to this message to help you all figure things out. Please let me know how to get you those reports.

Do you have addon managers reinstalling your settings/addons after you remove them?

Did you do the final advanced step on the reset UI instructions?

I completely removed my addon’s from Curse so it can’t reinstall them… It’s empty… not that I have it set up to do that. I wanted to make sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that they where gone.

and yes I’ve done all the step in the UI reset? Had no effect on the issue at hand.

I have now TOTALLY REINSTALLED the game and it did not fix the issue. I still have no arrows around the compass map and no diamond/gemstone tracker.

I was asking about the end of the support doc:

/console cvar_default

I just did
/console cvar_default in the chatbox and then restarted the game and the problem still persists.

You did catch the fact I REINSTALLED THE GAME right?

You did catch that some things are stopped stored in the servers, right?

I also started up the gaming laptop today and logged in on that and the copy on the gaming laptop is missing the Compass Arrows and the Diamond for guiding to Quest Objectives too. So it is not limited to just one computer.

From my view point, it seems that there is a setting issue or a bug that has developed in the account itself that is the problem. The account itself meaning the information of the account that is stored on the servers, not the files on the computer. This is the only way I see that the issue would persist on two separate devices because both of them are signed into the same WoW account. The root of the issue has to be on the server data for the account. I would like to know how he can get a technician to go about fixing that issue. It seems ticket worthy to me, not that I recall how to submit a ticket anymore. My own In Game Navigation is working just fine, so I am not able to replicate the issue myself. I was the one helping him troubleshoot it, but we are out of ideas at the moment, which is why he is here to hopefully get a resolution, or at the very least a path moving forward to resolution.

As Zungar mentioned, that’s irrelevant for variables stored on the server.

How do you suggest we get those variables changed? This isn’t solved until the problem is fixed, and it won’t stay solved unless we know how to prevent it from happening again if at all possible.

You are seeing this from me because this has him extremely frustrated. We have located the ticket submissions area but he keeps getting the following error:

“You can’t submit this ticket.
An error has occurred. This may be a temporary error, so please try again later.”

We recall that we may have hit this wall before. Neither of us understand why it won’t go through.

With the command I shared above and/or by speaking with customer support.

The only true solution would be to never use addons again. Addons likely modified the interface on that character. They aren’t vetted for operating correctly by Blizzard — just for adhering to game rules — and it’s third-party developers creating and supporting them.

Browser settings/addons blocking elements on the page. Try another browswer that you don’t normally use.

Your command that you shared did nothing to help the situation.

The initial issue manifested on two different devices, with two different setups. The main desktop with add-ons, and then without add-ons with a fresh install of the game. The gaming laptop without add-ons at all with fresh updates from blizzard. Can an add-on altar the core server files? If not, than the add-ons are not to blame here. If add-ons can do this to an account at the core level, than blizzard has opened themselves and their players to some serious trouble.

He started checking the other characters on his account after the add-ons were removed entirely, so it isn’t the add-ons effecting the character at all.

The error experienced by him while trying to submit a ticket showed up in game as well, not just the browser.

I was able to submit a ticket explaining the situation to support through my account for him, explaining also that they need to reach out to him and why as well as the error that is preventing him from submitting his own ticket.

Account variables stored on the server will appear on all devices. A fresh install makes no difference if it’s the same account. The variables will be applied to the fresh install before you make other changes.

No. They are modifying client-side variables for the player that are backed up on the server. Again, when you install, those variables are applied to the new client you logged in on.

This is the reason I said to open a ticket. I find most cases of failed tickets are related to the local player’s system, unless Blizzard reports that their ticket service is down (it’s not since you just submitted one). A phone can be used to open a ticket as well.

The ticket system has now given me a cookie cutter response and I can’t respond to the ticket, it just spins forever and never loads my response to them, and I am now getting the same ticket error he was getting if I try to open a new ticket.

One more question: Has the OP right-clicked a tracked quest (should be in a list on the right-hand side) and chosen “Focus” on any of the affected characters?

Oh how the game has evolved. I had no idea we could right click the quest and have something pop up. I don’t use add-ons ever at all and my knowledge of the interface is definitely dated so I never would have thought to try right click on it. I had to jump in game and test if it was real, which enabled me to show him what to do.

Both he and I are wondering at what point did blizzard rework the quest log to being able to unfocus everything in the log and also to not automatically focus on the most recently added quest in the log like it used to?

Just wanted to thank you. I was having this issue on only my Paladin that I badly wanted to play. I have to admit the issue caused me to not want to play at all. But this command fixed my issue and now I can level my Pally in Hallowfall like the holy light intended.

Yes I’m curious how all of my Quests on all of my characters on my account got UnFocused? and can you focus on more than one quest at a time again? We tried and it wouldn’t let us is why I’m asking?

It’s a new feature with this expansion. I think it’s because some players (myself included) grew tired of seeing arrows constantly if they didn’t want to quest at that moment.

Can only focus one at a time, so if you had none clicked as focus, none will be focused.

Nope, one at a time. You don’t have to right-click either, you can just click the little circle to the left of the quest name.
