Sub Rogue Tips?

Does anyone have any tips on playing a sub rogue? I’ve never understood how they work, or their rotation.

Thanks!

  1. Keep up Rupture and Slice and Dice
  2. Keep Shadow Blades on Cooldown
  3. Make sure you’re using Symbols for a Shadow Dance every 30sec
  4. In your Shadow Dance windows try to maximize your GCDs
  5. For PvE run Deeper Stratagem (Secret Technique too for AoE)
  6. Use the potency conduit that increases Critical chance in Symbols
  7. Make sure to pool energy for big Shadow Dances (see #4)
  8. Never Eviscerate without Find Weakness
  9. Akaari Soul Fragment is wildly OP for ST. MotMA is your go-to for AoE. Finality is not as good as people think it is, but it’s a decent compromise if you only want to have one legendary.
  10. [Lead By Example] is outrageously strong for Necrolord. Maximize its potential.
  11. Shadowcore Oil +Sharpened Stone for ever M+ and raid encounter
  12. Backstab is useless. Use Shuriken Storm if there are two targets instead.
  13. Cloak of Shadows validates your raid spot. Soak / Immune raid mechanics with it.
  14. Make a Tricks of the Trade macro with your tank’s name in it and use it on every trash pull.

Off the top of my head with limited time. Hope some of these help.

That is wonderful actually, thank you!!!

I see how it is. Teach them how to play but not me! RUDE! jk jk

Okay so I have Akaari’s. This week should I upgrade it to 210 or make a second legendary? I think I may be able to do both. I do enjoy mythics. I was afraid to spend the soul ash I have now, saving it for Finality.

Tough question that many classes are currently asking themselves. There is no objectively correct answer to this. It depends on your priorities. Personally, I’d much rather have like three i190s to choose from to be the best at numerous activities rather than one i210 pinning me to viability in a single place. I crafted Mark of the Master Assassin for M+ (which I frequently run as Outlaw right now) and then Akaari for world / raid / torghast / arena where I am playing Subtlety.

Assassination was only buffed 5% which isn’t even remotely close to where it needs to be (I’m simming 3990 as Subtlety and 2860 as Assassination even accounting for swapping to Zoldyk’s - the spec is 25% behind Subt not 5%) so I am no longer pooling to craft a Sin legendary on the off-chance it becomes meta in the next 3-4 weeks.

Can you wear more than legendary?

You think outlaw works better for M+ over sub? I got some good soul binds for outlaw. I keep hearing that Outlaw is useless.

Nope.

Eventually, yes. But it will probably be a year or so. Right now you cannot.

“Useless” like Necrolord?

Outlaw is probably the single best all-around rogue spec right now (Snoz keeps calling me out on this opinion but I am sticking to it). Outlaw is extremely strong for M+ right now (you’re trading marginal amounts of single target for extremely competitive AoE which in preferable in the current Mythic meta, especially on Fortified weeks). I am also seeing Outlaw consistently outperform Subtlety in Nathria even considering that only 2, maybe 3 of the fights have anything remotely resembling good AoE potential. Outlaw has an amazing legendary (celerity), some extremely powerful conduits (free roll the bones buff on dispatch, 13% extra chance for additional roll the bones buffs), brings a FREE gouge to your Mythic+ composition (with a talent) and is just generally performing outstandingly in the expansion.

People are all about Subtlety right now because the spec is experiencing a renaissance after BFA being so unplayable. But Outlaw is just as strong (for PvE) and arguably stronger.

I tried Outlaw for the first time in a few M+ runs last night, and I could NOT get this spec to pump out good damage. I was pulling like 3 to 4k DPS on big trash pulls. I understand that the premise is trying to maximize Blade Flurry uptime via using finishers, but it felt like there was so much downtime on BF. I have to be doing something wrong, because I was dead weight. :frowning:

I’m seeing 8k - 12k on opening and finishing big pulls around 6k.

  1. In stealth: Tricks of the Trade macro + Roll the Bones
  2. Ambush priority target
  3. Instantly Blade Flurry + Blade Rush (100% crit with MotMA)
  4. Slice and Dice
  5. Marked for Death Dispatch
  6. Play out the usual Outlaw rotation from there (heavily dependent on RtB)
  7. Make sure you’re kicking and gouging the critical abilities
  8. ???
  9. Profit (one of the best M+ specs in the game)

If you’re not finishing every trash pull at LEAST at 5k DPS (ideally closer to 6k or even 7k) then you’re not playing the spec right or you’re just not geared enough). Blade Flurry has a 93% uptime without [Dancing Steel] if you’re optimizing your combo point generation and 100% uptime with [Dancing Steel] but then you’re missing out on taking advantage of your MotMA to guarantee your Blade Rush pretty much crits every single time it is used.

If you’re new to the spec or running Celerity instead of MotMA then go ahead and use [Blade Dance] instead of [Blade Rush]. It’s easier for beginners to play and still does extremely competitive damage in a M+ environment. Furthermore, if you’re struggling with maximizing the potential of [Marked for Death] in Mythics then go ahead and play [Vigor]. It’s only about 3% behind MFD and equivalent if you’re not using MFD super well.

The real surprise about Outlaw is that I’m pulling 3-4k on BOSSES too, There’s a common misconception that Outlaw is all AoE no ST, but for Shadowlands that’s just not remotely true. Also, free Gouges are amazing. There are a TON of really dangerous but un-kickable abilities in Shadowlands Mythics that gouge trivializes. Like the bladestorms in De Other Side.

Yes.

Edit: This is a thread about Subt tips and I’m giving Outlaw tips…

Thanks for the detailed response! Seriously, that’s awesome.

Unfortunately I’m doing basically everything you listed there (apparently not though). I’m Item Lvl 194 as well. Ugh. I’m losing my god damn mind over here. Can you list out your talents? :frowning:

I’m only i190, so there’s definitely an issue with your play.

Tier-1: Quick Draw
Tier-2: Acrobatic Strikes (SO strong)
Tier-3: Marked For Death
Tier-4: Cheat Death (especially with Spiteful this week)
Tier-5: Dirty Tricks (free Gouge is incredible)
Tier-6: Alacrity (boring but by far the strongest)
Tier-7: Blade Rush (I run MotMA as Outlaw right now)

Necrolord Emeni soulbind for [Lead By Example].
450 Haste in my Outlaw set up
Celestial Guidance + Lightless Force on my swords (i194 and i190)
I have a 19.4% [Count The Odds] Potency Conduit

Are you talking pve or pvp?

This thread looks purely pve to me.

This implies it’s a PvE question. There are no “rotations” in PvP.

I have SD macroed with SoD and SS. Pretty decent macro.

Git gud? Lol

Shadowcore oil adds 15 damage ever 5 seconds, which over a 3 minute boss fight adds 540 damage, which is half of a backstab. Why is this important? No troll I’m having huge dps issues in mythics and im trying to figure this crap out.

Also what sharpening stone?

Are you sure you are looking at the same item? For me, Shadowcore Oil says it has a high chance to deal 262 damage. It scales with level. So, if you are looking at it on a level 20, it would say 15 damage.

Sharpening Stones either add weapon damage or attack power. The Shaded Sharpening Stone at level 60 adds 20 attack power. There doesn’t appear to be a weapon damage for version for level 50+ players, though.

lol yeah thats it because I was looking at them with my bank alt haha. I was like how TF is this useful ><
