Stuck in combat bug

Why isn't this fixed yet? This has been around since MoP as far as I know. This has been consistently happening to me on and off in legion.

Anyone know of a way to get past this without exiting the client? I've been able to get past it with invisibility or vanish, but on a character like a paladin I am SOL.

I just attack something and it resets.

I think they put it in on purpose, to create "immersion" by linking us to combat taking place nearby that doesn't involve us. That way when you're stuck in combat indefinitely, you'll get attacked by random worthless trash mobs over and over again. How much more immersive could it get than that!

Yea, I tried that with something nearby thinking it was possibly passively attacking me and keeping me in combat. No go :/

You should be posting this in Bug Report, not General. The mods here aren't going to answer, no will they be able to help.

I had the same issue the other day. I think I just logged out and back in again.

All I can do when this happens is run to some other part of the zone before I attack some new mob.

It has been happening since at least 2009, it is just much worse now. Cannot log off, can only alt f4, then come back and see still in combat....with nothing. Only thing i found that gets it out is too hearth, but ya can only do that every 20 minutes or more, then make your way back to where you were only to get stuck in combat again. Even with a feign death an no pet to be in combat.....still stuck in combat....with nothing.... since 2009 at least.....is it so hard to code?

Happened to me for the first time today. Kalimdor, Stonetalon Mountains at the Grimtotem Post. Just finished slaying the Hoard Generals, Talked to Grundig Darkcloud, the Grimtotem Chieftain and tried to mount my ride when I noticed the warning I was still in combat. Ran to a different map to no avail. Killed several enemies hoping it would release itself, but no change. Waited in one spot for me to go AFK and that cleared the combat flag. All fine and as it should be again. I have heard killing yourself will do it, but if you wish not to do that, take a break, get a drink and let it slip into AFK. Bob's your Uncle.

Firstly make sure you loot. Ive found that most of the time Im not in combat, I didnt loot something. I go loot and then it straightens up.
Also try attacking something else and then be sure to loot.

Betting they dont know where the problem is.
One character of code can send the whole thing in a tailspin.
Even on the websites I build a single space in the wrong place and an entire site goes down.
I dont envy Blizzard having to track this one down if its in the code from nearly a decade ago.

Might get better help in the Bug Report section. As for getting around it, the best thing to do is hard close wow since it won't let you log, or even exit while in combat. Log back in and you should be out of combat.

That doesn't work. Feign Death doesn't work anymore.

I don't think they know how to fix it or it would have been solved years ago.

Fix it Blizzard! Still happens. Got stuck tonight on my SP, hearth, reloadui, alt-f4, still stuck in combat. Tried realm-hopping, still nothing. Easiest fix, queue for an instance, then just leave.

Invisibility, vanish, shadowmeld.

It an intentional bug to make you waste your cool downs.

Iā€™m not sure, but I encounter this all the time.

I have noticed that if I kill another mob - it seems to get rid of itself. So it seems to be an issue with the game thinking you truly never left combat. (Obviously).
