Streamer/Player that started in Legion quit WoW

Interesting to listen to.

Dude entered in Legion, was able to follow along, but Battle for Azeroth and now Shadowlands built on non sequitur narrative, and Shadowlands built on Battle for Azeroth (because stories self-contained in expansions are no longer what WoW does of course) and dude was just lost.

In none of the exposition for neither Battle for Azeroth nor Shadowlands (prepatch, intro quests) was Sylvanas explained to a possible new player in an in-depth way, for example.

Books and media outside of the game are either just stuff you have to buy, or are completely unavailable unless you have hundreds of dollars on ebay.

New players are materially forced to read through hundreds of pages of Wowpedia if they are inclined to care about the lore.

People are going to probably disregard it, but it’s reasonable.

People love to be immersed in the stories in a game, but when it’s done in a way that WoW has gone, the immersion gets lost because the game fails to tell the story as a whole with gaps in its narrative that assumes you know what’s going on.

Some people don’t have a problem with it which is okay, but it kind of gets to the point where you start to see that the story in the game is irrelevant when you could just wait over a year for a novel and short stories to release to fill you in.

Like with Sylvanas novel. Seeing how they’re just leaving the outcome of the story behind the narrative of this one character so secretly to the point where they’re willing to leave lots of gaps and inconsistencies in the story since bfa alone kind of makes me question about why I should bother playing the game when this novel hold the secrets?

Telling the full story in game would be wonderful. Even if it’s just us sitting around and listening to characters talk. The entirety of shadows rising could have been it’s own mini patch or just the pre expansion patch as a whole. Dont get me wrong, the story was fantastic, but things like this helps with the narrative in game.

Here’s a quote from a machinima by CaptainGrim that I think sums up the problem with the story;

Parody Jailer; “I’m so far ahead, not even the WoW writing team knows my plan.”

I saw it and I couldn’t help but laugh at everything in that one episode. It hurts, but I can’t say it’s wrong :man_shrugging:

It’s not but go ahead and shill them.

I feel the same way. CaptainGrim’s machinimas are awesome.

Note: Even if they do this it will just make them angry.

The problem with Sylvanas is we still don’t know what she wants. The devs. keep saying “she is going to reveal everything” and yet when it counted she didn’t. This makes it seem like they either don’t know or are dragging the story because they don’t think people will like the answer. A mystery is only interesting for as long as you don’t think the author isn’t just pulling you along.

Dude on the left was interesting and informative. I hadn’t considered trying to learn about the main cast as a new player.
Dude on the right was a boring FFXIV drone, and I say that as an avid fan of 14.

I largely agree.

I am not a fan of the way the Forums are used to spam advertise for Streamers. Ads for streamers are about the only thing I flag - especially since Flagging for Advertisement is an option.

But at least Baal made his own point. He didn’t just link a video, like many of the other streamer ads.

Still, linking a You Tube of every jerk with a camera and a complaint is something I will never understand. I think we can conjure enough complaints on our own. The lore may indeed feel disjointed for new Players. Baal could have made the point without the video.

Everytime anyone makes a point someone comes out with IVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE so nah lol

Also a 3 post alt from GD and this is the first video I’ve posted of the guy so you’re just weird and now muted :relieved:

This video feels somewhat disingenuous to me. If Sync Weaver started in Legion it’s not difficult to know who Sylvanas is, since we can assume that he played through Stormheim. It makes me assume that he didn’t read quest text. The story of BFA is bad but it’s not that difficult to understand, the only book linking to it is Before The Storm and there’s nothing in it that would cause missing gaps in BFA’s story if that book isn’t read, and you can get any and every WoW book from Barnes & Noble. Brian talks about the FF lore book being from someone’s perspective which he likes but WoW lore books have been doing that and people dislike it.

I’ve never seen either of these two before, but as someone who hasn’t watched them before they feel like FF shills, Brian especially. He mentioned a video he made talking about his opinion on WoW, which in the context of this video is ironic because if I want to know what’s in the video I have to look elsewhere for it. Going from the context of this video, that video is probably him disparaging WoW so that he can convince more people to play FF. I’m interested in seeing that video but I’m not going to put much effort into seeing it since I’m lazy, though if anyone wants to put it here I’d appreciate it. The biggest thing I got from this video is that Brian seems to be the type of person that really annoys me.

I mean let’s be honest, at no point during Legion are we explained Sylvanas.

The game assumes no player is new.

Stormheim doesn’t give you a brief summary of Sylvanas and her journey.

Brian is yes, but I shared cuz of the other guy

Think about Shadowlands.

The entire intro questline is a hot mess that assumes the player intimately understands who all those characters are.

The exposition is non-existent

Not every player is a Limit Max who doesn’t care about lore at all, and Blizzard has forgotten that.

So…he joined during Legion, had no problem understanding who the likes of Illidan and Sargeras were, but was confused by Sylvanas?

Xera questline explains Illidan EXTENSIVELY via unskippable dialogue.

Sargeras is explained by multiple NPCs similarly.

Sylvanas isn’t.

That is true…

The hell she isn’t. If I had to hear about “The Ranger General” one more time…

For an Alliance player starting in Legion, it can be inferred that Sylvanas is someone who is a part of the Horde that has insidious plans. From that point, it should make sense that she’s a threat in BFA. It’s not difficult to see for people who are paying attention. Her entire character doesn’t need to be learned about to know what is happening. All that needs to be looked at is the situation the player is in and go from there.

New players in Shadowlands have to level through BFA. Most of the characters at Icecrown should be known about at that point. The only character I can think of who they wouldn’t know is Bolvar. Bolvar is central to Shadowlands though and he talks about himself during questing. Players don’t have to be handfed everything like simpletons and we don’t have to be reminded all the time who characters are as if we’re watching the nth iteration of a comic book character’s origin movie.

Nah look up the Stormheim storyline.

Not a single Sylvanas exposition anywhere.

Or in the Shadowlands intro questline, you are not explained at any point who any of those NPCs are if you were a new player.

You get the idea some are your enemies, but who are they? How did they get there?

That’s not long term exposition.

If you care about the lore or you want to care about the lore, that is not anywhere near enough

And Calia. And Gazlowe since Gallywix was replaced off screen. Lorthemar too, he didn’t show up on BFA until the very end and it’s no longer accessible iirc.

And no, new players don’t have to level up in BFA anymore. That was changed.

Chromie time lets you level up in any expansion.
