Strange Audio Problem

Okay, please forgive me if my issue isn’t explained clearly- it’s the strangest thing and I don’t know how to really describe it.

My system audio works as expected no problem- until I launch WoW. Once WoW is running, my WoW sound comes correctly but the rest of my system sound experiences issues. Most specifically Discord. I no longer get notification sounds from Discord when I get messages or Discord calls. I no longer hear my hotkey sound play when I press my push to talk. I can hear people and people can hear me just fine- but the actual system sounds and notifications do not play while WoW is active.

Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix this?

Is your sound device set to allow exclusive access?

I don’t believe so? I’m not 100% sure how to check that, but this is a very recent development that I’ve never had an issue with before.

It’s on the advanced tab for the sound device in windows.

So that was checked. I tried disabling that and relaunching and the problem persists. And it’s only WoW causing this issue. No other games override my sound settings.

Is all of the sound coming through the same device?

Yes. I’ve always had everything set to come through my headset.

This is a very weird behavior of the system, i do a lot of switching here and usually there is only no sound when the device was removed only.
Check/try this:
Set both WoW and Discord to use system default, and in the taskbar select manually the default device. (BTW if u change the default device WHILE discord is open it very often doesn’t output to it AT ALL, wow is a bit glitch about it too, but it’s more of a rare event), in that case u can just go in each app and select something else then select the system default device back.
If it is working like this or it doesn’t work, do the other way around, select in both discord and Wow the device itself which u want it to be the output.
If both doesn’t work, maybe check if the number of audio channels isn’t too high, i don’t really know if this would cause such issues, but i never got a error beyond this.
As a reference, i’m using 64 channels and a audio cache at 128MB, which may be the default in wow client, if u r at this, or higher, try to change to minimum and relaunch wow client and discord.

If nothing of this works, i would go for updating the audio drivers, cause in theory, with the exception of using the output in exclusive mode as was already mentioned, it shouldn’t even be allowed by the system/driver to get full control of an output.
