There have now been multiple times where, I get on the pterrodax, fly to Brother Joseph, kill him, and find I can’t click on the orb. So all I can do is die.
The fix to this is to fly the other pterrodax to the other ship, but how am I supposed to know before the encounter which ship to go on? I’ve always done Brother Joseph first on all difficulties, because every time I went to the other ship, the orb wouldn’t spawn.
Now sometimes the orb doesn’t spawn on Brother Joseph.
What’s going on?
It happens if the one you kill dies too fast, from what I encountered. I just engaged them with a non-damaging ability and then waited about 10 seconds (which is long enough on Mythic for the Spawns of Laminaria to appear at the boats).

My experience in most old raids since they became soloable is this: Kill any boss too quickly, it will bug the encounter. You will have usually need to wait for a considerable time to unbrick the instance. Some reset fairly soon - say, 10-15 minutes or so - others need four or more hours to repopulate the instance, yet others will be perma-bricked until the weekly reset.

Yeah sometimes I wait, then kill brother joseph, then still can’t click on the orb
Do you have your pet out? There are currently a bunch of classes encountering bricked bosses due to how they kill them, not just because of speed. For Mages it is Flurry, for Monks Crackling Lightning, and for Hunters it is if the pet does the entirety of the damage.
IME, these NPCs will bug out and prevent you from teleporting back to shore or to the other ship if you one-shot them with any attack. Even attacks that haven’t been noted as problematic.
So love tap them and let some few seconds pass before obliterating them. Make 'em feel like they’re doing ok for a little while.
Waiting before attacking isn’t the answer. You have to tap them and then let some time pass.
In other words,
Sniperorc is right.
Assuming you are high enough level to one-shot raid mini-bosses and if you are on a pet class (e.g., hunter, warlock, etc) put your pet on passive or dismiss it.
If you have any trinket that can proc burst damage, unequip it.
If you have the DISC belt, change it to something non-leathal, Cauterizing Bolts is probably the best for this.
To start the combat, first use a non-damaging spell/DoT (e.g., warrior, paladin, death knight, druid: taunt, hunter: Tar Trap or Binding Shot, warlock: Curse of Tongues, mage: Polymorph and shaman: Hex), wait a few seconds, then use whatever passes for your least damaging attack. I haven’t tried the snowball with a rock in it, but that might work.
This level 80, item level 660+ hunter can just about run the whole of BoD without pets or weapons, punching everything to death. I haven’t tried the old “raid naked” meme, but I reckon that being a reality isn’t far off.
Truth be told, your worst enemy in all these old raids is yourself. Well, that along with roleplay and elevator bosses, but I digress. Blizzard and the mythic beat-the-clock meta have taught you terrible habits, just accept that the speed-run mentality is your enemy in old content. All the more so when the very old Packard Bell that hosts these instances is being pushed far beyond its design limits because of this drop rate boost event.
I’d been not having many problems with the phase 1 part of the fight, solo, until I tried w/ my DK today, and 5 in a row couldn’t get off the ships. Read Sniperorc and Tendric, and first retry was EZ-PZ.
What worked for the DK (mid-640s w/ Reshii Wraps and the DISC belt) was swapping to a lesser belt, starting the fight with a taunt, standing around until the 2 big non-attackable elementals spawned, one next to each boat, then bopped the priest w/ Howling Blast (30k insta and 300k dot over 24 sec), then wailed. Priest died, normal port to the other ship, repeat the taunt start w/ a few seconds wait, before Howling Blast, and a lazy beat it to death. Port to main dock, knock off 1/3rd of the main boss’s health before interrupting, pop CDs, profit.
Summarizing my experiences dancing around the problems here:
- There’s definitely a “kill too fast” bug on the first priest, no matter which one.
- There’s definitely a “kill the 2nd priest too slow” mechanic that can come into play in solo; IDK know if there’s a nerf in place for soloing, but either being barely able to solo and not doing your best on the 2nd, or simply worrying to much about “kill too fast” can cause you to take too long, and I’ve hit both off and on, over the years, always getting past on the next retry.
- There might be a “kill too fast” bug on the 2nd priest, regardless of order. I’m guessing that the too slow limit is at least 10 seconds and probably longer for solo, so taking a slow start on the 2nd has almost always worked for me on true OP toons.
- As others noted, there’s still the add mechanic on the main dock - if add gets to boss, the boss will start an uninterruptible death cast, so kill the boss before the cast finishes or die - or stop the add first, next time. If you’re in TWW gear now, the add should never be a problem, the boss will die too fast once you get there.
