Stop Using My Name, Please

Short version: stop typing our names in text, then using voiceover for things that are entirely different. It’s an attention suck and feels disingenuous.

Long version:
For years, you have attempted to create the illusion of player power, agency, or whatever you want to label it. When I see countless quest text or npc voiceover referencing text that doesn’t correlate, it doesn’t immerse me in the world. It pulls me out of it and it feels… false.

Please don’t type “Valirim” and then have an NPC say “Champion”. Don’t type “Bob” and have the NPC refer to you as “Hero”. Just don’t use our names. It’s not hard. It doesn’t make us feel like we are “part of the story” to see our names in text, just to have the NPC prattle on using some generic moniker at the same time, describing the same event.

It just reminds us that we are everything short of special, because countless thousands of people have also accomplished the very thing we just did.

uh… ok i guess?

I agree. I don’t want to be the sole savior. Too much responsibility for my little body. Please just let me be a little adventuring monk whoo only makes tea.

Still a tad odd people are all “I’m not a sole savior” as they then go on to defeat massive threats to azeroth

I like when they use my name. Never breaks immersion

I miss when we were mercenarries and soldiers who were hired out of necessity. When we became the firrst people to calll then it became a problem.

My names are what break the immersion for me…

“Stop the Warsong threat Snorlax!”

If thats what you want, Vanilla/classic is the only time in which that was appropriate.

Your “little body” is now an undead slaying, dragon slaying, old god slaying, people slaying, killing machine.

You will never go back to being a nameless grunt and the lore would be even worse if it allowed you to do so.

It’s like taking the star programmer in your department and assigning them to manage the JIRA board full-time.

I mean…the first question is, how would they even know your name? Your character is either mute or rather expressionless.

We are Link, silent and ever accepting of our burdens to save Hyrule and help Zelda.

Hahahahahhahahahahhahaha.

Thank you, that was really funny.

To be honest, I’m not into the whole “Savior of Azeroth” thing.

Wait… are you telling me i’m not the champion of Azeorth in the lore?

i am

i’m a king, i greatly desire praise for my heroic deeds

also money

Don’t worry champions, I will carry you on my Bear back to save our world.

Honestly thought you were going to complain that because your name is close to Karen you were going to ask the forums to back off

I agree the use of names in text is jarring.

That is EXACTLY what I was trying to get across, but more succinct. Well done.

Yah, coming from “Powerpants”, I am sold that immersion is your MO, clearly.
