So, it seems it’s the high population servers. I was able to reset my “default server” my account logs into. After that, I was able to connect to lower population servers, but when I try to log back into Area 52, I get stuck at “Logging into Game Server”, then times out.
How did you do that?

Completely exit wow and battle.net.
Locate your WoW folder in Program Files.
Open the retail folder.
Once in the retail folder navigate to the “WTF” folder and open it.
Right click to open the “Config.wtf” file with notepad, and at the very end of the text add the line:
SET disableAutoRealmSelect “1”
Save the file, open battle.net launcher, and start wow.
You should now be greeted with the server selection screen.

Basically tells the WoW client to stop Auto Selecting your realm based on previous sessions.
It’s not permanent and will reset to it’s default of being enabled after you select whatever other realm you picked.
Same at my house, hubby is on and playing and here I sit!
Finally got in. Couldnt cast anything… got dced… now i have the “acharacter with that name already exists.”
Derp.
One of those gotcha moments.
